Lake Arrowhead - Mellow Yellow

Triple award winner “Mellow Yellow” 1958 Thompson 17′ Sea Lancer

Today, thanks to fellow Woody Boater Marten Anderson, we travel to beautiful Lake Arrowhead, California for a Live-ish report from the 2013 Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show hosted by the nice folks from the Southern California Chapter ACBS. The high altitude mountain air and laid-back atmosphere of the Lake Arrowhead area provides a perfect venue for a classic boat show. As expected, the range of classic boats at this years show is great – something for everybody. – Texx

30th Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show
by Marten Anderson

The ACBS Southern California Chapter’s 2013 Annual Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show is being held this weekend at the Lake Arrowhead Village. Antique and classic wooden boats vie for trophies and can be viewed up close both Saturday & Sunday at the Lake Arrowhead Village docks. On display throughout the village are vintage woodie cars, hot rods, antique wooden boat models and early outboard motors. Antique boats are also for sale throughout the village.

The featured boat this year is the 1936 22′ Earle Barnes crafted “Bille Bea II” – a winner of the Lake Tahoe Wooden Boat Concourse d’Elegance.

  2. Troy

Since I can’t be in SoCal,
Thanks for bringing this show to me!

Looks like a great show. Question perhaps for Tim Robinson who was there. I see mountain mistress looks like it has a 5 gauge instrument panel. Sequoia, for example only has the 4 gauge panel. Cant remember its model year. Wonder at what point they switched to the larger panels in the 19 foot model? certainly by ’39, at least. thx.

    • Brian Robinson

      Don,

At the end of the pre-barrelback 19′ Custom Runabout series (1935-1938) four Special model 19s were built with Chrysler Crown engines and the 5 unit panel in 1938. All four were originally delivered to Lake Arrowhead.

      • don vogt

Thanks, Brian, very interesting. I was not aware of that. This explains the apparent discrepancy in instrument panels. Are any of the other 3 still around, as far as we know? Texx, might make an interesting story. I assume maybe they were ordered to be part of a racing class?

Thanks Matt and Texx for using my photos for today’s story and header! Beautiful weather yesterday for the show. Billy Bea II was on her trailer in the village for all to get a close look at her.

  6. Gary

It would be informative if the numbers indicating the model number were known on the builders plate of the Gar Wood Mountain Mistress.

    • Brian Robinson

      Gary,

Mountain Mistress is a Chris-Craft and the only Gar Wood there was Empress, so I’m not sure which one you are referring too?

  7. Philip Andrew

Wow imagine sitting in the rear seats in Richards ‘ flat bottom Mixed Emotions.’ That must be ear-splitting.

  8. Carla

Thanks everyone for welcoming Hagerty’s own Lauren Gusler to your fabulous show. She’s already put Arrowhead on her list of shows for 2014!

  9. Suzie

Looking for someone at Lake Arrowhead who would be able to give a ride. Missed the show this year and love the pictures!
