The Final Coat Of Varnish! Oh, Man Oh Manischewitz!

,

The last sanding earlier this week! Jose’s Arm is like Arnold Schwarzeneggers now!

Get out the Manischewitz! It’s getting close to party time at Katzs Marina. The final coat is on WECATCHEM and as Bob Kays said,”she is spectacular”. Imagine a 25 Sportsman with the perfect Katz’s Marina finish. I must say that its one thing to see it in photos, an entirely different thing in person.

Wow, her wood is a dad darker and richer than others. Beautiful

Her new Red interior will be ready next week, and chrome from Graves Plating is getting close as are her Kocian Gauges. Even her clock has been redone. The Trusty W from VanNess Engineering is being gone through and a bad torque job on my part has been addressed. Hopefully this will all come together in June ish! maybe in time for the big Show on lake Hopatcong in Late June. Either way, We are going Woody Boating big time!

15 coats of lust

Perfect lettering by Allen Johnson!

Through the exhaust hole. Mmm that reminds me, I am due for my Colonoscopy.

New Wiring, and perfect finish.

Thanks to the entire team for all the hard work. This project started right before the holidays and WOW! She is amazing and moving along at a wonderful clip!

She is looking great! With this project almost done, I think it is time for another boat.

Doesn’t everybody have an exhaust port photo? LOL. Looks awesome Matt. To me there is nothing more relaxing with instant gratification than laying on a coat of varnish, Except for that elusive “Final Coat”

A crap load! Each coat was sanded and cleaned up along the way. It would take an entire day just to sand the boat. The finish they do is perfect at the end and not just coats of varnish

I would be interested in the total true cost for this restoration. Not what Matt paid but if “Joe Public” would take the same boat into Katz or any other reputable restorer.

We know a new bottom starts at $1000/per foot. So what does a total refinish as Wecatchem just received cost?

Each boat is different. I will say this, I got an agreed on price. No time and material stuff. Never again. The job is going very well and I am joe public as well. Ha! And good luck getting a bottom done for 1k a foot.

My question was what can a person expect to pay for such things as: chrome, instrument restoration, lettering, upholstery, and engine overhaul etc… Basing it on a boat similar to yours. These are questions that people who might be interested in getting into this hobby might want to know before taking the plunge.

As for your comment “Ha! good luck getting a bottom done for 1K a foot” proves why people get turned off this hobby. It has been written here on Woody Boater that 1K was a baseline to start from. Also you are NOT Joe Public you are Mr. Woody Boater and don’t fool yourself that you are paying the same price that anyone else pays. Advertising and promoting companies will get you preferential treatment. Not that it isn’t deserved for all the time you put into keeping this blog going.

Matt please do not take this as an attack on you, but more as a teaching experience as to what someone can expect to pay for services during a restoration.

You are showing your lack of real experience. It’s your pecks that get the workout and not your biceps. By coat 12 I couldn’t put my arms down all the way.

That finish is so beautiful, I would be afraid to use the boat.
Better get some really big fenders.

It’s not a simple answer. Not trying to be funny or dodge anything. 1k a foot is in a perfect world. But the real issue is getting an agreed price at the start. We will do a larger story on this this week
