Fellow Woody Boater Roger Arkwright reports in from Algonac ish, but he went DOWN to Algonac, which I am down with, never really thought of going South to Algonac for some reason. MAYBE BECAUSE IT’S NORTH. But maybe he went North to Algonac from Ohio. It’s all kinda confusing. HA, Here is Rogers report which, yes includes a log splitter show, which I am sure will take over the conversation today. If we can thread Bacon, and Zip the smoking Monkey in here, we could blow up the internet. AND! Roger didn’t send captions. Know what that means. I get to make them up!
Lost in the weeds, or Detroit, either way, not Algonac. Be patient !
Matt, traveling from the Toronto area my buddy needed to pickup a specialty radiator in Detroit, so we ended down in the old industrial area near Ford’s River Rouge plant; historically a very interesting area. Next to one of the many derelict buildings was this orphan…just had to take a picture. It seems interesting projects are everywhere.
This was NOT Agonac. Or a boat Show!
After Detroit on Friday we went to Wauseon, Ohio because my buddy said that if we are going to Algonac and he was driving, (plus he helped me last week to work on my 23′ 1972 Chris Craft Lancer), we needed to see this steam show.
And you thought boat shows needed more to do!
Yep, no boats but lots of historic engines for boats and we did see them cut timber the way it used to be done back in the day.

We jump started this in Florida at the Palm Garden. Very fun boat and great owner!

Ok, there is nothing funny here. Molly-O is hands down the coolest 25 sportsman out there. That rear sterring and fold down windshield, her histoy the owner, its all just everything right here that I love Algonac in one boat, OH AND THAT WATA!
What can I say more about this interior that we haven’t before. ITS PERFECT!

Mother of all show boats! AHHHHHH, Its like watching warm butter slowly melting on a fresh warm stack of pancakes, right next to some bacon right out of the iron skillet. Ya, there, I weaved bacon into this darn story. Mfine, take it away. Troy? Where will todays story go?

Thank you Roger for some great photos of a wonderful show with perfect weather last Saturday. The run to the Old Club on Sunday with blue skies was the traditional wind up of the party. Hey Matt, it’s nice to have you know all of us well enough that you can write the captions and get all the details correct. You were the only thing missing to make the weekend even greater. See you next year!

I forgot to mention that we tried to spread the love by having seven boats giving rides for three hours on Saturday. We put smiles on 208 faces!
BTW, I can not tell if this is how the day looked or a funky camera setting. They all look like washed out 1960’s postcards. Which I thought was a cool effect. But maybe it was just the look, and those post cards were acurate? Light is a funny thing.
Canadians normally come down to our shows, but if they came from Toronto I assume they went over to Windsor and then UP to Detroit and then Algonac. I think it is the only place where you can go North from Canada into the Lower 48.
It was a great event. I got to go boating during the show and a round trip ride on Sunday on Black Beauty. Doesn’t get much better.
The XK is Shannon’s, but occasionally steal it :). This year I used it as one of the boats giving free rides to the spectators. I think I took about 20 people over 2.5 hours.
“Glass of 68” is John Adams 1968 CC Lancer. Glass hull, custom wood deck.
And Rick Laenen used Black Beauty as one of the free ride boats this year.
I would like to know who engineered the ropes that were tying those boats up. Pretty wild combinations. Was it somebody from 50 Shades of Mahogany maybe ?
50 Shades of Mahogany – a great name for a nauti look at how to tie your boat (or anything else) safely and securely. If we use Troy as the modeling agency, this could be the most popular Public Service Announcement in history.

Organizing the Algonac show is a big job. One of the biggest is getting all those judges lined up. A hats off congrates has to go to Tim & Paula O’brien. Great job Tim & Paula.

As I said on Friday. Can’t wait to see the pics. You did not disappoint me. Looks like Cindy moved out and created some great weather for both shows. Was Chris Smith at the Algonac show. I didn’t know if he still went to shows signing his books. He was in Hessel two years ago. As for the negative comment yesterday about “junk on the water” at Lake Hopatang I hope he was kidding. I cant think of a better way to insult a whole group of people and their hobby at once. I, LIKE A LOT OF OTHERS, TOOK OFFENSE TO HIS COMMENTS. Oh well keep up the great website! To all of you woody boaters out there keep em pretty and keep em running. I enjoy seeing all of you at the shows, and out on the water.
We all miss having good conversations with Mr. Chris Smith. At our Friday night exhibitors dinner we all signed several birthday cards for Chris, who will turn 90 on July 4th this year.

Chris Smith was not in Algonac this year.
After the great plywood boats from Aristocraft, I hated these hard top models. By fluke, one was the donor of the 6 cyl Mercruiser for my service runabout.
Matt, that is an early model 9-teen, as is identified by the bow light on it. Poor little fella had been left out for the birds. I am staying very busy restoring these boats for customers in my age bracket as these are what we grew up using and what they made memories in, but that’s a whole other story…
These are great family friendly boats that we still use today!
Gotta get back to Algonac
All in all, one of our best shows ever, and the boat rides were the icing on the cake.
Matt, thanks for the kind words about Molly-O, I think that I will keep her awhile longer. BTW she will be 80 years young(launched July 23 1938)next year and I think that we should have a big boat birthday bash for her during the Algonac Boat Show ….are you in?
