Get Out! Get Out!

Alex Watson and his pet birds up in Hessel.

Today is the day! The official end of Summer days here in Virginia and most of the east coast. The temps are supposed to drop into the 20’s tonight, and so we are headed to the dreaded ramp!  plus Gale warnings  here on the bay! The Katzs marina gang was yanking boats all day and making sure customers get there boats out of what is to be a in the teens day on Saturday. Yikes. Are you pulling out today? Only 130 ish  days til Lake Dora. Maybe I just pull WECATCHEM and drive south to Florida this weekend. Leave the boat there for the winter. Wait, thats not such a bad idea. What are your plans this Veterans Day weekend?

Oh yeah!

16 degrees with a coating of snow this morning in southern Michigan. Today also the anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald going down in Superior. Still sad to think about all these years later!

Greg, Was thinking the same thoughts. Those of us who live in or spend time in Northern Michigan admiring the Great Lake Freighters, have sad feelings for that tragedy. I remember seeing “The Fitzgerald” sail. May she and all her crew RIP. Lets never forget.

Greg, an intense low pressure system caused a bad storm on Superior just over two weeks ago. Conditions were said to be worse than the storm that sank the Fitzgerald. A weather buoy NE of Munising recorded a very steep wave of 28.9 feet. I read that was a record wave height for buoy data. Two people were killed when washed off shoreline rocks near Marquette by the waves. The EF anniversary is sad, but a good reminder to respect mother nature, especially when you are on the water.

We’re still in the water here on the Tennessee River and we never have to deal with ice. There’s still room here for “half downs”, i.e. those that want to move south to warmer climates but still have four seasons. Note, “half backs” is the term for those escaping from Florida’s long summers and coming to the central southeast.

It was a chilly 60 degrees here this morning but projected to warm up to a comfortable 72 this afternoon. Further predictions are that el’ Ninio will give us a warm dry winter in Florida so it sounds like there will be great weather for the St. Johns River Cruise and the show….Y’all might as well come on down now and leave that flaky white stuff behind.
