If you think that going to Lake Dora in the spring is going to just another boat show, you are missing the real magic of the weekend. See, its not a show, it’s the beginning of the season, its the time we all gather to talk about the long winter of working on our boats. Its a chance to take a short ride, or long, and give ourselves a boost to keep restoring, sanding and varnishing. My thought exactly! Since Bill, Gail and Scott have probably attended most, if not all of these shows from the beginning, they deserve to have the AristoCraft line showcased on the next poster.
I too am a bit biased, owning a classic Torpedo restored by that dynamic duo.

If anyone has a recommendation for a poster artist please let me know. The Tidewater Chapter will be celebrating it’s 15th year partnering with the Reedville Fisherman’s and the Fisherman’s museum is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary this year. Arriving Monday with the Coronado. Always great boating the Harris Chain of Lakes. Another good boating trip is taking the river out of Lake Eustis up north through Lake Griffith to a wonderfully divey bar/restaurant in Blue Heron Cove. They have great gator on the menu. Allow at least half a day for the trip…but time well spent.
There wasn’t a poster for the first show but I I have somewhere a photo of the poster Date Tassell and John deSousa had made which they hung from the rail in the deck of the Holiday Inn in Sanford that said, “Southeastern Antique and Classic Boat Show.
It was a fun show in Sanford 37 years ago and with the help of folks like Bill & Gail, Mike Matheson, Riley Richardson, Gary Scherb, Chris Youngblood, Terry Fiest and dozens more it has developed into a major event.
To those who haven’t been…come on down…You’ll never forget it !
Wilson, remember those first years, the “midgies” that cover everything about that time of year. They don’t bite but they sure are over everything like locust. Don’t see them at Tavares, maybe the constant breeze keeps them away.
FYI, Aquatic Midges are mosquito-also called “Blind Mosquito” a layman’s term, which may refer to several species of these midges. Blind mosquitoes do not bite, suck blood, or carry disease.

Dad took our boat to it’s first show in 1990 and went almost every year into the 2000’s. I’d meet him in Sanford, at Blair’s Jungle Inn when he would go on the cruise and then would catch up to him again at the docks at Gilbert Park. Thanks for the memories! Side note we are hoping to put the boat in on Saturday to run around a little bit, ironically we are working on a 100 year old home in Mt. Dora so can’t attend the full show this year. So close and yet so far away…
Sunnyland Greetings to everyone!!!! Certainly appreciate all the interest in our show and look forward to a re-union of old friends. Many people ask me how we do it every year and my answer is simple: Its about people—–the Boats are the commonality, but the people make the Show. People travel from many states to kick off the boating season and once again, we have some beautiful Florida Weather waiting for everyone. With the total loss of our docks, we decided to make Lemonade out of Lemons and put a new spin on the Show—–This will be the “First Annual Sunnyland Beach Party”—-bring your Flower Shirts—head south to Tavares and enjoy an Outstanding Beach Band on Friday and Saturday!!
