Thunder Run – Sunday Mornings At 10AM

,

Shep and Fam on Moms Mink!

A huge shout out to fellow Woody Boater Shep who has invited the entire planet to a regular event on Sunday Mornings on Lake Wawasee. Here is his story and some photos. Mom’s Mink looks fantastic. Its always wonderful to see a great boat being used as..well…a boat! Take it away Shep!

Oh we need to do this big time!

Last Sunday it worked out for Kathy and I to take Mom’s Mink to Lake Wawasee in Northern Indiana for the Thunder Run!
There is a group of Woody Boaters there that do a parade lap around the lake every Sunday morning @ 10:00am all are welcome to join.

Gar Woods

I had heard about this parade for years and had thought about getting there. It all came together when Fritz Kreutzinger came to our Indiana chapter dinner meeting in March.

Lake Wawasee is a very well known classic boaters paradise. Very rich in our history

Fritz invited all to come up and join in the parade! So I was wanting to go then. The last straw was we met a great couple who we traveled to Africa with on a mission trip who’s parents had a place on the lake.  Doug & Susan are great their kids are great! Our kids got along great with their kids. The whole group in Africa was awesome!

What a great time – Every area should have a Thunder Run on Saturday or Sunday Mornings.

Anyway when I heard that Susan’s parents had a place their we had to go!
So I got in touch with Fritz to get the details of the run he said he would not be there. He gave me another name Luke Knecht who I could contact if I needed help. He said just look for the Riviera boat that’s him? Come to find out that Luke was not able to be there that day either but his wife Jeanne was the photographer for this weeks Run. So all photos included are from Jeanne and Facebook
I have to say this was so awesome!

Fantastic Photo – Lake Wawasee Facebook page

Everyone meets up in front of the Oakwood Inn on the lake for the start of the Run.
I also have to say this is the first time I have been on an Indiana lake with another GarWood !
Dark and Stormy a 1937 Runabout was beautiful!

The Wave!

There was 15 Woody boats  in all that day representing 5 or 6 different manufacturers.
This is fun! To think that these guys do this every Sunday in the summer.
With so much support from the Lake people is great!
My Dads comment for that day was. I know my arm is going to be sore tomorrow from all the waiving I did around the lake.

Moms Mink

The parade takes about 45 min to go all the way around the lake. So you can see why Dad might be sore.
If you want to see more on Lake Wawasee wooden boats on Facebook to see more pictures.
There where 15 Woody boat  there last Sunday they have had as many as 40 before.

All photos are from the Lake Wawasee Facebook Page, if any are yours, please let us know. We will give personal credit.

Great story and great event. Dave is also a great guy. He rode with me in Tiger Lily last year for our Port Huron version of a thunder run when we did the Friday morning photo shoot. He then used Mom’s Mink to give boat rides on Saturday afternoon. His riders were really thrilled to ride in that georgous Gar Wood. I am looking forward to seeing Dave in Port Huron again in a couple weeks.

We had a house on Wawasee when I was a kid. Spent all my summers there until college. We had a prewar CC custom deluxe runabout. Would love to find the old girl.

This fun event has been on my “Bucket List” for sooo long. And it is only a 2-hour drive south. The other reason, well there are several, is that my 1995 Coronado was delivered to Lake Wawasee new, and spent its whole life on that lake, till I bought it a couple of years ago.
I need to start planning this trip, we only got a couple more good Sundays left…

    GREAT EVENT!

This is what WoodyBoating is really all about. Get together with fiends (old and new) and ride the waterways.

    Thanks, Matt Great job!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks at Boat the Blue in Port Huron.
Greg, Kathy & I have signed up to give boat rides again this year. We had so much fun doing it last year. Everyone we took on a ride has a wooden boat story that brings back memories for them. All are welcome
I also hope to be more help with the show this year.
You guys did a great job last year. Can’t wait!
