2011 South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic – A Vintage Boat Show for Charity

Live-ish Saturday from the 2011 South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic hosted by the nice folks from the Northern California / Lake Tahoe Antique & Classic Boat Society. Over 65 boats in attendence this year at the unique Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club, Lake Tahoe’s only inland marina.

This show is extra interesting for us because we have the opportunity to see some boats that, before today, we have never seen before, at least that I have never seen before. So for today’s report, we thought it would be fun to feature a few of those antique & classic boats.

“Tango” is a super rare 1930 28′ Dodge Runabout owned by Harold & Nancy Orchard, we are told that this is the only 28′ Dodge Runabout on the planet and it’s powered by a huge 325HP Lycoming V-12.

“Swan Song” is an amazing 1934 23′ Hacker Deluxe Runabout owned by Greg and Jennifer Rudloff from Auburn, California.

Fellow Woody Boaters Dave and Tammi Lyon from Carmel Velley, CA own “Baby Zackaroo” a very cool, and very rare 17′ Dee-Wite Split Cockpit powered by a 93HP Gray Marine 6.

“Curvaseous” is Robert and Madeleine Mount’s 1938 24′ Greavette Streamliner.

There is no question that these Greavette Streamliners represent some very unique Canadian design features, and when restored properly – certainly stand out in a crowd.

From the time I arrived at the show on Saturday, I was attracted to “Klondike”, and I kept going back to take more shots of this beautiful Chris-Craft Clipper.

“Klondike” is a cool 1938 25′ Chris-Craft Clipper powered by a Chris-Craft 85HP 6, owned by Paul Anderson and Bobbi Callison from Los Altos, Ca.

When I first spotted this Century Resorter, I thought of our friend Philip Andrew from New Zealand, he loves these Century’s and it’s winter there right now – So this one’s for you Phil!

This beautiful 1956 18′ Resorter “Co Co” is owned by Gene and Carol King from just up the lake in Carnelian Bay, CA.

“Viking” is another fine boat from Los Gatos, California, owned by Steve and Cheryl Caplan. A very nice 1952 28′ Chris-Craft Semi-Enclosed Cruiser powered by twin 300HP Chevrolet 350′s.

On Friday, Matt posted a shot of a Besotes runabout which was popular with some of our regular viewers, so here’s a few more shots of two fine examples of the Besotes marque at this years South Tahoe show. There is a third Besotes there, we will try to get a few shots if it on Sunday. The first three shots are of “Milligan” a 1959 21′ Besotes Tahoe owned by Robert and Tina Bosworth from Stockton, CA. This one is powered by a Chrysler Hemi.

Next is “Foolish Pleasure” owned by Mike and Janet Bosworth, from Lodi, Ca. This is a 1965 19′ Besotes Utility powered by a big Ford 427 V8.

Here is fellow Woody Boater Lee Chase relaxing in the aft cockpit of “Mountain Lyon” – Why is Lee smiling you wonder? Well if you owned a rare 1938 28′ Sea Lyon 40 Runabout c/w a Lycoming-VF 325HP V12, you would be smiling too!

On Sunday, if the weather cooperates, we are hoping to get out on Lake Tahoe to participate in the Sunday Picnic, and “Mountain Lyon” will be leading the way. Stay Tuned to Woody Boater for a Sunday Live-ish update.

Thanks Texx, Co Co is a beauty all right. Just seeing those shots warms me up! Thanks for sending the close up shot too.
I wanted to comment on your great post yesterday but it seems there was a glitch for a bit there. Great story of bygone road trip stuff. Wish I was there for the Tahoe week. South lake then Sierra Boat Show. Give my regards to Herb Hall and Steve Lapkin if you see them. Steve will no doubt be making the documentary of the concours show. He was the original owner of my Arabian.
How sweet is that Gravette by the way!! Cool boat.

Thank You, Texx. And a big thanks to Hagerty Ins. We all reep the benefits of your generosity in this Lifestyle but not all of us remember to say thanks.

  3. Texx says:

Brian Robinson is here with us at South Tahoe this weekend. He mentioned this morning that “Tango” and “Mountain Lyon” are the only two Lycoming V12 powered runabouts in the world. Cool stuff!

  4. m-fine says:

Yeah, owning a boat with a lycoming v-12 would make you smile…until you get a quote for an engine rebuild. Then you get an entirely different look on your face!

Speaking of expensive, warn the greavette owner to stay near shore. The cost of a salvage operation in over 1000 feet of water has to be pretty steep.

  5. Thanks Al….We are honored to be able to be a part of it all….Look forward to seeing many of you on the North Shore in 2 weeks!!

    • Texx says:
