The Gods Did Not Want Me To Go Boating This Weekend! Thank God!
This weekend, while Texx was at Lake Tahoe, and others around the country were enjoying a wonderful weekend of classic boating. I was at our Reedville home catching up on things that had been left to rot, grow, and weather because of my absence earlier in the summer at boat shows. And to top it all off the weather was so sucky, that we could not go boating. AND, to top the top of it all off, all it off, when we decided to clean up and cover up the boats. The son popped out and wind died down. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ALL ABOUT?
But some good things happened. I got the deck done, I mowed areas that were about to go rogue on us, and was able to finely finish my barn. Shingles that had been sitting in a pile for 3 years….. But that was not the best part. While out in the back roads of Reedville, I came upon a man that makes very cool wood lawn chairs. We drove down the road to his farm, and there it was.. A very cool vintage gas pump. A mid 50’s Texaco Fire Chief pump barn find. I commented on it, and the farmer said. It has a price on it… I asked, what is it. He said, you remove it, that’s the price. WOW! I have been looking for one of these for years. And the price was very right. By the way, it was hooked up and STILL WORKING! The next morning, Jimmy and I had our trailer there, and it was in place in front of the barn in less than an hour.

A Wayne 505 mid 50’s Texaco pump. Now looking for a cool globe for the top! The patina is PERFECT! The gas price on the face…28 cents!
So, sadly I missed the shows. But I would have missed a great weekend of fun yard work and exploring around the back roads of Virginia, meeting new neighbors. There is magic sometimes in your own backyard!
Hey you got to git her done, plenty of shows to come!
Ride that cool 8N ford…..almost as good as to
“GO BOATING”
Horrors! Ryan Gadow caught me on a fifty foot Bertram tupperware yacht this weekend….that was really my evil twin.

OK….what about Hessel, where Riva’s never dare and launch’s make big crunch sounds bouncing off tings….??
Sorry, but that’s not a barn find. That’s a “farm” find.
Please tell me you looked through his farm barn too. Might be a 25′ Sportsman in there you could call “Farm Wood.”
Chris, Hessel was wonderful this year! I’m working on the story for WoodyBoater for later this week. So many photos and perspectives, it will take a few days (and Tigers baseball nights at The Islander) to distill it down.
I need permission from the WoodyBoater executives to make it a two-parter. Hey, if you threaten to raise their insurance, it might swing the vote…
You don’t need permission. Send them two parts and ask for forgiveness.
Only TWO Alex?? You could do two just on the feature boats! And those beautiful Hackers, oh my! And what about that very grey Garform that showed up at Dockside Traders? I know its not wood, but hey, its a Gar! You ought to be good forat least a week.
DONE!! dollar an hour…. Your Sportsman was fantastic, as well as many other unique craft. My buddy took home a winning plack, we missed the attack of the launches and had a wonderful ride up Les Cheneaux….great day!!!
Cool pics–vintage everything. I would suggest that we are distant relatives but your place is much too tidy. Tell us about the chevy pickup and the red-belly ford sometime if you haven’t already.
Its a 1958 Chevy, had it for close to 20 years. Its used to run trash to the dump. 6 cyl. 3 on the tree. Always starts. The tractor is a 1941 ford, used to manuver trailers around the yard. Hitch on the front. My weekends are all about being a different time zone. A simpler time, slower pace and everything can be fixed with a screw driver and hammer. If it has a chip in it, it aint in my barn!
you mean a computer chip or a paint chip…with you it could be either way….or both!!!

I chuckled this morning when I read Matt’s gas pump story.
My plan to once again make my annual trip to Lake Tahoe on my trusty Harley-Davidson via the back roads of America were dashed when I became busy at work.
So a day before we had to be at the event (for boat launching and judges meetings) I decided to hop in the old SUV and do one if those all-nighter / non-stop treks instead… After all, it was only 1,300 miles one way.
Folks asked “Texx, why not just fly rather than drive?”
Well, I had also planned to stop by the Bonneville Speedway in Wendover, Utah on my way home to see my racer friends at the salt flats… And American Airlines (or anyone else for that matter) doesn’t fly to Wendover.
Anyhow, it all worked out, the Lake Tahoe Concours, Bonneville Speedweek for a day, and I am now a couple of hours from home after about 2,850 miles in 6 days…
But getting back to the gas pump story, I chuckled because in retrospect, I feel like I just spent 6 days pumping around 750.00 of gasoline… Wow!
Regular gas was 4.45 per gallon in Tahoe City on Saturday – Yikes! I was afraid to ask what marina gas cost at Tahoe…
I think I paid $5.95 per/gallon to fill up Empress on Thursday at the Sierra Boat fuel dock. They said it was the cheapest on the lake.
HA, its 28 cents at my pump.. And $3.39 a gallon in Reedville this weekend. I swear it pays to leave DC and fill up in Reedville sometimes. Gas was around 50 cents more in DC.
I’ll stop by with a tanker truck to fill up at $.28 a gallon. No ethanol either I am sure!
Matt – I have some great hot rod / car culture images from Bonneville yesterday… Do you know of a website that folks would be interested in seeing them?
Texx –
Post them up on the HAMB…..
Wood Eye! HAir Lip!
Wish I was paying $.28/gallon. Drove down 850 miles to TN this weekend pulling the boat through torrential rain and lightning (MI trip replay). Big truck pulling the boat means 14 1/2 mpg. Too tired today to play with Panther but tomorrow we see if the enigine runs. If it doesn’t I’ll have to check if Canada Goose is anywhere around.
Rick – Glad to hear you made it down to TN safely.
Don’t forget to send (e-mail) us a holiday post card(s) of the family vacation & Panther…
I hope you are going to hook that pump up to a real supply.
Gas… So I hate buying gas for my car. Just money out the window. But when I fill the tank on my woody at the inflated marina prices I enjoy every minute of it. Because that means I’m using the thing as God intended. To me a successful weekend is burning one full $75 tank of non-ox premium. Pure bliss.
Rabbit, i feel the same way. Gas for the gass guzzeling truck bites! But premium for the boat is painless!
Texx,
I know how you feel! I emptied my pocket of receipts after the ride to Hessel. Seemed like a pile but only $90 worth. At $12-15 a fill up it hurts less but more often. $4.09 in the UP
