Not only is there a week of cool classic boating events, and one very cool Mecum Auction taking place at the end of the event, and by the way, you get to go over and preview the boats, so its like a show with in a show that you get to buy the entire show if you would like to show off to your neighbors.. ALSO,  on Friday and Saturday, you can go to one of the many workshops at the Mecum tent next to the Abby, Now this is not the Abby as in the church in England, sorry all you Pippa fans… mmmmm…..although if they did a workshop on that transom I suspect we would sell out the event.. Anyway, I digress…

Even Tiny Tin will be there, you can tow it through the tulips!

The Grand and Glorious event on Geneva lake is clearly the place to be to just bask in all that mahogany and cool. Trips on Canals, Workshops with luminaries in the lifestyle of Woody Boats. Chris Smith will be talking on what went on on the production line at Chris- Craft.. If you have not heard Chris talk, this alone is worth the trip.. Very funny stories and a chance to hear it all from the horses mouth.. OK, he is not a horse. It’s an expression, he is a hoot.. and a FANTASTIC guy!  Now, if you have read Don Danenbergs book…s n how to restore a wood boat, and like me, can only take it at a page of a time because its so thick with great info.. Well, Don will be there as well.. Have him sign a book.. He will be talking about, preservation vs restoration. This series of workshops has been lead by fellow Woody Boater Dick Werner who has knocked it out of the park in bringing back to us these symposiums. I have personaly attended one of them up at the Antique Boat Center, and I gotta tell ya, worth every what ever thing you have to do to make it. And this one is the mother load.

Here is a fun shot from the event at the Antique Boat Center.

These workshops will be held Friday and Saturday 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.m. at the large Mecum Auction tent next to the Abbey.

Did I just read ice boating? Ive been thinking about doing that as I have a place in the frozen north. You should do a story on that. Crap all this Lapstrake stuff! Wish someone in New England put this on.

  2. matt

We have done a bunch of stories on ice boating, hit the search button on the top left of the web site.. That might help.. Ice Boating is big on lakes up there as you might expect..

  3. Allen

For those of us who can’t attend maybe a good idea is to Youtube the workshops or put them on a disk available for purchase for the club’s charity benefits..especially the Chris Smith presentation. Some of these should be archived for posterity and reference don’t you think? Just my thoughts.

  4. Woody

No beer. Brats.. Cheese curls… Football.. Cheese heads.. Non of that so you may want to stay home

  5. RiverRat

Looks like lapstrakes looming large in workshops. Would love to be there but must stay home to work for fuel. Have fun. Hopefully there will be lots of pictures from some kind WoodyBoater. I would also pay for copies of lapstake related presentations.

All boats and no beer makes Alex a dull boy.

I guess I’ll just sit this one out…

But wait! I’m bringing a 25′ Utility! Loads of freeboard for beer! And Michigan beer is as awesome as, well, the length of Michigan winters. I can haul from Hessel, sell it from my boat to the desperate masses during the show, and make a KILLING!

It might even pay for the %$#&@! copper tacks Mike M insisted I buy and have installed for the restored hydem.

      • Mike M

You will thank me when the judges in Geneva spread your hydem wide open and nod with appreciation that you’ve taken the high road. After the show you can pull them all out and take them in for scrap. You can thank me later…..

  7. Alex

There is a Pumpkin beer, BTW.

But never in my boat. I think Mike M keeps some on his Arabian.

Bells Amber? Mmmmm. Actually Chad, I just checked. By coincidence, that’s the exact beer I have open as I write this!

Official beer of WoodyBoaters? I’m not leading that charge. That would be far worse than a Chevy-Ford battle.

    • Mike M

A long time ago I was in a “beer of the month” club and the ONLY beer I couldn’t drink was a pumpkin beer. We drink lots of Coors Light on the Arabian, (but never while we’re operating it!)

Pauls “driver” just picked up Barnwood and he brought me 4 delicious cases of “Ricards Red”, a premium Canadian beer. That might make it onto the Mighty Arabian….

      • Texx

Like the famous quote from Archie Bunker –

        “You don’t buy Beer,
        you Rent it…”

    • Bob

Official beer of Woody Boater has to be Sebago Brewing Company, brewers of Boathouse Brown Ale and Runabout Red.

  8. Phil Jones

Lets not forget this weekend is the Smith Mt. Lake show, featuring Miss America IX and Betsy’s comming out party.

  9. Slats

As a Geneva Laker, I cannot imagine a more perfect way to spend the weekend. Boats, boats, & more boats! And to top it off, a Bears-Packer game that Sunday. What a weekend!

  10. Mike Hunt

Mecum is having an auction? I wonder how many of the “Sold” boats from the Winsted Auction will be sold again here?!? What a joke….
