Cooper Durren, the official Son of sons of varnish!

Please say a hello to little Captain Cooper Durren. Fellow Woody Boater Chad Durren and his wonderful bride Andrea and little Lily can now claim a crew of 4. One of each. It was a very fast delivery . As Chad said in last nights email.  “Her doctor did not even make it in time for the delivery. From the time we entered the hospital, from the time she gave birth, 26 minutes had passed. Not quite the 21 hour delivery from our first child. Andrea made a speedy recovery is doing great. ” So the big question to our readers might be.. What sort of boat is Captain Cooper getting?  Another quote from Chad. “I hope to have his Commander SS done by his 16th birthday :-). It’s been slow going but I ALWAYS keep it moving forward. I tend to start with the small stuff. The hull is in Michigan but the bits are with me in Illinois. He will have one bad ass boat when it is finished. The great things in life always take work. If it were easy, we wouldn’t love them so much.”

Lily and Cooper..

Little Cooper Durren almost ready to go boat’n!

Lets try and break the record for comments today and welcome little Cooper to Woodyboaterville!

By the way, SO jealous of the SoV onesie. All picture evidence suggests I only had plane ones at that age.

Congrats Chad and Andrea! Now that your full crew is on board, I expect to meet Captain Cooper and see you all at Algonac in 2013. No excused next year!

  3. Mike Green

Congratulations we welcome in another wooden boat lover thanks to his awesome parents.

Cooper’s going to have a lot of fun “messing about in boats”. Welcome aboard and congratulations.

  5. Andrea Durren

Thanks so much Woody Boater and friends! We are also taking name suggestions for the new boat!

  6. Rick

Congratulations, one of each is a joy and ensures that you can now deal with the full range of boy and girl issues as they grow up. My suggestion is that you keep them both on the water as much as possible. You’re taking boat name suggestions but what, you didn’t trust us enough for boys names? Smart woman.

  7. Chad

Thanks fellow WoodyBoaters. We couldn’t be more proud of our little man.

A couple details to help in naming the boat:

Cooper tied an overhand knot in his umbilical at some point during the pregnancy. I’d share a photo but it’s not for the squeamish. He is very lucky the knot did not cinch tight.

He was a fast delivery. So fast, that we feared he might be born en route.

He has a small birthmark (mole) on his wrist in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Bravo on the fast delivery, Andrea! Best wishes & happy boating to all!

    OK… back to boats.

Cooper’s boat has it’s original 327Q engine intact. However, it’s missing the V-Drive and I have no idea if the motor can be resurrected. I have yet to pull the heads off.

If the cost of the “Q” rebuild is too high, I may consider a re-power. What other motors should I consider?

Must be V-drive compatible (Borg Warner, Walter or Paragon). 25 degree drive angle. Think high revs and enough torque to push a heavy, 19 footer along at high speed (45 mph +). And something with easy-to-find-parts.

    Thanks

The easy answer for a new engine is a non Q 350-400 cuin SBC. Tons around, lots of parts availability, sufficient torque and power, and you know it will fit in the space available.

The more fun answer would be a high displacement modern LS series GM engine like an LS7. That will give you tons of torque, seriously high rev capability, and top speed well above 45 mph. I know they can be marinized but not sure about how hard it would be to adapt it to a V drive.

Congratulations! What a fun and exciting time. Enjoy him and the rest of your family!

Woody Boater regular from New Zealand and father of my own sweet baby Isabella, Philip Andrew, brought me this post to read along with my morning cup of tea.

Finally! A Woody Boater post I can speak with some authority on.

Nice work Mum, a speedy delivery and one perfect little man. Well done to all and we look forward to watching him grow up on the blog!

The nicest part of the trailer are the two new wheels I brought along when I picked up the boat.

  12. Bob Kays

Best wishes to the entire family. Will he get his first boat ride this year? The world is a better place with another Woody Boater. Enjoy every minute!

      • Bob Kays

That sounds like a plan! When our son was that age boat rides were a great way to start a nap ( for him).

  13. Tyson

    CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WEEE LADD!!!

Question though, who’s leg do I have to huump to get a 6-9 month onesie?? That says “daughter”?? If it is a one off, then, thats effin rad!!

    Congratulations again!!

  14. Jim Godlewski

Awesome family you guys have. A big CONGRATS!. Wrap the little man up and toss him in the front and your good to go. He will be nighty night….
    Take Care.

  15. Texx

We are proud to have Andrea, Chad, Lily and now Cooper Jack Durren as part of the Woody Boater family…

Although the Woody Boater family is somewhat dysfunctional!

In regards to suggestions of a name for Cooper’s boat, I had a perfect name until I remembered that “JACK” was already taken.

In keeping with the retro black & white theme on todays opening photo, I wasn’t sure which photo to post, so here it is both ways. We will find a good name for Cooper’s boat.

  16. 51Resorter

Congrats! Good job getting them started in antique and classic boating early in life!

  17. Alex

    Chad, warmest congratulations!

Now that you have one of each, you should get fixed. Come on! With a classic mahogany, a classic aluminum, and now a classic glass, you’re “done,” right?

Of course, Andrea might have a steel Roamer in mind…

  18. Chad

STICK A FORK IN ME, I AM DONE! …with babies AND boats.

The only boat Andrea might have in mind is one for the bathtub.

Alex, you’re gonna have to make about 150 comments tonight to break Matt’s comment record challenge!

  19. wicked wood

My young fellow captain, it is now and forevever in your blood, as my father instilled it in mine

  20. scalertom

Welcome aboard Captain Cooper. May you always have fun being a Woody Boater.

  21. Rick

What if he grows up to be a hell raising, Harley riding, speed freak…..wait that’s Texx. What if he prefers MODERN GLASS! GASP!

  22. rdapron

Congratulations on the new addition. Being a Dad was one of my better choices. Your young Woodyboater lad needs a mahogany rocking speedboat!
