SOLD OUT!

Tune in Monday for the big 2012-2013 Woody Boater gift idea story. We have searched around the universe and found some fun stuff you may want to get for a gift this season. Now of course this is tricky since there is no way in hell that your loved ones read Woody Boater, so its not like they are going to find what you REALLY want. So we are working on a way for you to get your point across. The fact that you really want a 2 1/2 copper exhaust pipe for your boat, and your family is going in on a bread maker needs to be rectified. Now, as a teaser, we have one of the first items. And today is the day if you want one. Fine Wood boats, Jim Staib, found 12 New Old Stock Reed & Prince Screw Drivers. These are the correct Chris Craft kind. He is offering them to Woody boater readers for only $25 and will include a a hand driver and a insert bit delivered in US. (one to use and one to show)
They have been sitting in a warehouse for 40-50 years and have surface rust as shown. These are genuine Chris-Craft accessories as shown in the catalog page.

Here is the catalog page that Jim sent along!

Should be worth a bonus in a judged show. He was going to save them for Tavares but this looks better. One Problem he is leaving on Monday morning and don’t get back in the country till the following Tuesday. So the first 12… make that 11, I just bought one… to email him gets them. Just click here for the web site, and for you real lazy boaters, here is his email. [email protected]

My wife says I must have a screw loose buying all these boats. Would this help?

  2. WoodyGal

Yes Alex! Now you can tighten all of your, and your friends, loose screws. Doubt your wife will think it’s funny tho.

I read this post and said “self what the “H” is a Reed and Prince driver”?

Being an overly inquisitive sort of guy I did a little research. Turns out a Reed and Prince is a refined version of the Phillips bit and screw. Invented by a Brit named Frearson as an improvement on the Phillips, the Reed Prince was manufactured from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s by the Reed & Prince Manufacturing Company.

R& P screws and drivers (aka Frearsons) look like Phillips head screws at first glance BUT are not the same. The Frearson has a more pointed 75° V shape. One advantage over the Phillips is that one Frearson driver, or bit fits all Frearson screw sizes, another is that it allows more torque to be applied.

The take away is that as the sharp cross of the Frearson is incompatible with Phillips bits and drivers which are not one size fits all and have a rounded tapered cross head. In other words, using a Phillips on a Frearson will screw the Frearson up!

My opinion, unless you absolutely positively have to have authentic Frearsons hiding under your bungs , or are severely addicted to original marine zippers and NOS canopy parts, I would advocate refastening with good ol square head Robertson’s… Canada’s gift to the world!

    • Jim Staib

They were original equipment on many Chris-Craft, Gar Wood, and Riva’s. The design allowed a worker with one bit to drive any size screw.
Even if you don’t put them back in this makes taking the old ones out a lot easier.

I totally agree, and besides this is the perfect addition to the vintage toolkit for CC owners

I thought it was the NHL, but that seems to missing these days so I am going to vote Hortons as well.

I always thought it was the de Havilland Beaver… (c/w optional chimp for Chad)

I thought it was the Disappearing Propeller Boat and Shania Twain. I understand Robertson went to Henry Ford to sell him on using Robertson screws, but because Ford was so cheap he probably didn’t want to pay whatever “premium” involved to use Robertson screws, so we’re stuck with crappy slotted and phillips head. Haven’t verified this story yet.

ONLY 5 LEFT AS OF 7PM, OK all you Hockey pucks up North. Ya better stop jerking off over one of your own and get a real screw driver!

Stompin’ Tom! That brings back memories Texx. “Tillsonburg, Tillsonburg, my back still aches when i hear that word.” Best listened to in college after consuming prodigious amounts of 50.

Of course, these days, my back still hurts from parenting.
