Chris-Craft Carina 21 on Lake Dora

Yesterday our friends at Chris-Craft made an important announcement that we would like to share with the Woody Boater community. Although Chris-Craft produces modern boats, their mission is to remain true to the history and spirit of the Chris-Craft brand, which we respect. They also support the antique & classic hobby in many ways which we appreciate.

So we were excited to learn that Chris-Craft is working with a major televison network, and the subsequent exposure this will provide is great news not only for Chris-Craft but also for their growing network of dealers throughout the world.

We were first introduced to the new 2013 Chris-Craft Carina 21 at Lake Dora during the Sunnyland Wooden Boat Festival in March and the boat looks beautiful out on the water. The Antique Boat Center in Cincinnati, Ohio was recently named as a Chris-Craft dealer, arranged to have the new Carina 19 at their display during the Sunnyland show.

On Saturday afternoon of the boat show, we had the pleasure of joining the folks from Chris-Craft and the Antique Boat Center out on Lake Dora for an impromptu photo shoot which was fun.

On their website, Chris-Craft notes:

“Our Mission is to remain true to the history and spirit of the Chris-Craft brand which represents: Design Excellence, Classic Elegance, Craftsmanship and Absolute Quality, Exclusivity, Total Reliability, Exceptional Client Service – History, Heritage, Legacy, Legend and Myth – A Premium Product, Priced Accordingly.”

Carina - 3
We thought it would be fun to compare the new 2013 Chris-Craft Carina 21 with a similar Chris-Craft model from 1969 – the innovative 1969 Chris-Craft Commander Super Sport 19 – to see how things have changed over the last 44 years.

We should note that we do have access to some great photos of a beautifully preserved 1969 Super Sport 19 from fellow Woody Boater Alex Watson, but because it’s currently 4:30 EST on Saturday morning, we decided not to call him for some last minute photos. But we do have an original 1969 Chris-Craft Commander Spec Sheet courtesy of the Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club Archives.

You’re gonna give all of us old guys a heart attack with that header. When it first opened up, I thought that sweet young thing on the swim platform was naked!

  2. Texx

CK – I’ll wait until later this morning as he is probably shoveling snow and grumpy.

    • Randy Rush Captain Grumpy

Someone mention my name? And no im not shoveling snow.

  3. Dreed

Is the bow flag pole leaning to the left? It must be an Obama thing.

  4. Bob Kays

Is there a boat in that header shot? I can’t see one..

  5. Rick

So if I sell my woody and but a new Chris will my wife suddenly look like the header? She’s not behind me is she……ouch….stop…ouch…HELP!

  6. Alex

Mayer, did you snap that header photo with your cell phone again?

  7. m-fine

Waiting for the closed bow (Capri?) coming this summer.

  8. Alex

Pic of my 19′ Commander. More likely to find a baby aboard mine than a babe. (Sigh.)

  9. Chad

My Commander came with a lot of extras:

    External gas tank
    Spare tire and wheels
    Canoe paddle
    Fire extinguisher
    Boat hook
    Bottle of car wax
    Mounds of organic compost
    Family of rodents

  10. WoodyGal

This is the coolest fiberglass hull ever! I know, I know it’s an I/O, just stick a piece of tape on your computer screen & look at the rest of it!

  11. Randy

As far as the cover photo goes, the first thing I noticed (well, actually the second) was that beautiful boat tied up tight to the dock with NO bumpers!!!!! Those rubber dock strips do mark up the hull.

  12. rob

Chris Craft, please, please, please have a V drive as an option. Transmissions do not belong in the water on such a nice boat.

    rob

  13. Dane

Matt, So you decided to get Hank the Blonde Decked Chris Craft for graduation?

  14. Alex

Since were on the subject of 19′ Commanders and XK-19s and comparing styling cues, here are a couple XK pics.

(Admittedly, I’m also posting these so Chad and Mike Watson will get off their butts and finish theirs. I can see a Commander/XK Plasticpalooza in the future.)

Susan, so glad you kept Larry’s. It’s in great hands with you.

    • Texx

Thanks for sharing these pics Alex.

Last July I had the pleasure of riding in this amazing Chris-Craft during a visit to Hessel, Michigan – it was wonderful!

(Alex, should we tell them that it was at 1:00 AM under the northern Michigan moonlight… or is that creepy?)

      Texx

    • Paul H.

yes, Susan – thanks! Plannign a trip to Coeur d’Alene this fall? I hope so. Lets get some great old CC glass out to the International. You in, Alex?

  15. Al Benton

I know that Wood is Good but I’m beginning to believe that Classic Plastic is Fantastic after drueling on my iPhone. The 19′ Commander and XK19 photos are causing a bit of pitter-patter in my chest and the need for several hankies today.

    Thanks Alex and WoodyGal.

  16. floyd r turbo

    That’s one fantastic “transom” shot.

  17. Dennis Mykols

Has anyone seen the front cover of the new issue of Great Lakes Scuttlebutt???
