Thanks to long time fellow Woody Boaters Dennis Mykols and Janet Tyson we are happy to announce the official start of Summer on… in…. Spring Lake, Michigan. Spring Lake is actually is a historic village located between Spring Lake and the Grand River as it flows into Lake Michigan. In other words, the perfect setting for a celebration of vintage water craft!
This is the tenth year of the only such event presented in beautiful Ottawa County and boat-show sponsor, the Spring Lake Historic Conservation Commission, invites everyone to join us for this family event. To mark the occasion, several Best of Show winners from years past will be on hand as Featured Boats, including the 2012 Best of Show, the circa 1895 Truscott fantail launch, Victoria, towed by a 1926 Ford Model T Runabout.
Dozens of antique and vintage wooden boats and classic ‘glass’ craft are displayed on land and in the water at Millpoint Park in the Village proper. Judges’ awards include Best of Show, Best Inboard, Best Outboard and Best Non-Power, among others. Everyone attending is invited to vote for the People’s Choice and Captain’s Choice awards. A highlight for children and youth is the model boat-building workshop, sponsored by one of our local Boy Scouts of America troops.
Refreshments, rest facilities, ample parking and dockage, and a well-maintained boat launch are available on-site. Additionally, restaurants, fast-food retailers, convenience stores and gas stations line Savidge Street (M 104), our main thoroughfare.
Spring Lake Village was incorporated in 1869. The area originally was home to indigenous tribes, who sold their land to European-American settlers in 1835. The quiet wilderness quickly was transformed by the logging industry and later by farms, manufacturing, houses, schools and other hallmarks of modern community. It is the aim of the Spring Lake Historic Conservation Commission to honor this history as it informs our future.
The Tenth Annual Spring Lake Wooden Boat Show is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013. You can find out more here on there facebook page here, not back there, just here. Not that here, this HERE! So be there. Oh god not again, make it end.
