It’s a funny thing when you go to a fantastic boat show. you see so much in a short time, and yet when you get home, its the small personal things that you recall with a smile. Getting to know bob Rice and his trusty U22 are at the top of that list. Bob was kind enough to give us  a ride after the Lake Hopatcong show in his very nice restored U22 called “Lieutenant”  Bob is a fantastic guy and very well loved on the lake. Bob is also Chief judge for the annual Lake Hopatcong show.

Bobs boat is a special in the fact that it’s only left Lake Hopatcong once in its lifetime, and that was two years ago to Lake Mohawk during the first lake Mohawk show. We have heard stories like this, but never really seen or ridden in one. Bob is also famous for never going any faster than 1500 RPM’s.. It was perfect, that U22 road like a Cadillac at that speed. I could have been on it all night to be honest.

Karen and I both read the placard in Bob’s boat at the show, but did so separately and both of us thought it was probably the best placard we had ever seen. When I told her about it she, told me she almost felt like crying when she read it – it elicited a powerful, emotional response. What passion Bob must have had as a boy, and it obviously continues to today. Bob, Stan Strouble and the whole chapter crew did a superb job at this event and their hospitality was first rate. There is a very special group of boats and classic boaters on this lake.

Very interesting story about a beautiful boat. But nothing was mentioned about her name “Lieutenant”. Is that her original name or one that Bob gave her? Bet there’s a story!

“Lieutenant” got it’s name because Bob and his lovely bride Pam were both Lieutenants in the Army. They were both active Army and met just after returning from the Vietnam war.

I am happy for Bob but I would never give up my Lymans. I would never trade for a CC even one of their Sea Skiffs. Lapstrakes Rule. No offence given or taken, unless of course you negleted to pull in your fenders while underway. Thanks for letting me see.
