Here is a shot from Woody Gal BEFORE we had a chance to clean it up
WOW, what a fun week. And the pictures that were burred in drawers and special places are amazing. In some cases though, the photos had experienced a rough life or worse, time and film technology had deeply yellowed or changed the color. So as part of the story we tried to bring back to life your shots.
After being cleaned up and color corrected. NOW, we do love the age and patina on old shots. But its a fun exersize for digital purposes to restore the shot to recall what it was like when first shot
Its actually simpler than one might think. We would get a scan in and do a couple tricks in color correction. Add blue, take out yellow. And BAM some of the shots would pop back into place. In some cases lost information would be found. Also some shots would be to dark, or copied to many times, so we would brighten the shot and or clean out degraded info. We NEVER change content, and especially on the boats, usually its about scratches in the shot or background. We hope you enjoyed the week, we certainly did behind the scenes..
Header before, the shot is amazing, but the boat looks like its going to tip over
Here is the header after, we cleaned up the photo scratches, we also twisted the image so the composition was clearer. So some small background was added on the upper left. Note how tall the bow looks in the after shot. Nothing was changed, just corrected.
the original from David Graham- Before cleaning up
After, We opened her up, note the leaves changing and the wood on the boat is more pronounced. We whad to decide on being a tad washed out to bring out the details of the shot
Here is Starlite before,
If you look closly there are dark areas around the people and base of the woods. This is from age, processing, being copied a mess of times.
In this case we added stuff for header sake. We cleaned up the scratches, Took out the strange green tone, and for the sake of adding some texture but it on a paper. Now remember the original is safe, so we are just bringing these shots to life in a safe and fun way
These shots to us are always cool. The first day of delivery. The issue here is that the film technology of the day or exposure to light has caused blue to fade away.
Here is the shot with more detail and the colors are more accurate ish. We never want to pretend that we are exact in color, thats the job of actual fabric samples etc…..But it makes the photo more true. Note in this the texture in the paper came out after adjusting the levels.
In this case, we felt that the scratchs were part of the story. But the clots of dirt were not. Thats all we did, and silouette the paper
Here is the shot cleaned up but not cleaned up, we slightly darkened the background to bring out the fun little boat running down the water. WATCH YOUR WAKE!
What fun, And remember, no actual original photos were changed, altered in a way that added or subtracted any detail from the boat. Just made better for looking at. We strongly believe in the accuracy of age and quirky details. Thanks again for allowing us to share your amazing photos. Matt
