BAM! Get out a can of Colt 45 you dog! Foxy chicks are going to dig this ride!

With the new rules regarding ‘Late Classics” Woody Boater asks the real question on everyone’s mind. Is Sex panther here eligible? Yes, its not in everyone’s taste, but it is a 1979.. And it is cool.. If a XK jet boat is eligible than shouldn’t this be? Is there also the possibility that diverse taste will make the boat shows more fun. More dramatic.

$_12-1

I gotta be honest, if I saw this at a show I would stop.. Yes its a pimp boat, but there is a pimp car in the Smithsonian.. Thats right, This Sleekcraft is rather iconic.. It screams, or growls of a time period and brings a smile to my face.. Do I want to own it.. Dear god no.. But do I appreciate it as art.. You bet! Bring on the debate.. That is what makes this new classification fun.. Here it is on ebay if you are compelled by the panther!

Its a rocket even in the driveway!

Brian Fantana: No, she gets a special cologne… It’s called Sex Panther by Odeon. It’s illegal in nine countries… Yep, it’s made with bits of real panther, so you know it’s good.
      Ron Burgundy: It’s quite pungent.
      Brian Fantana: Oh yeah.
Ron Burgundy: It’s a formidable scent… It stings the nostrils. In a good way.
      Brian Fantana: Yep.
Ron Burgundy: Brian, I’m gonna be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.
Brian Fantana: They’ve done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.

LOOKS like a Floyd R Turbo boat to me!

I for one would love to see stuff like this at shows.
    The more diverse the better!

Kind of makes me think of the “Happy Gilmore” effect on golf. Too bad that didn’t really happen.

  2. Alex

Of course it should be. It would be the most talked about boat at any show. Can’t you just see the judges?

Although I can just hear my 6 year old asking: “daddy, I know what a panther is, but what’s sex?” And then I’d have to throw some quarters on the dock to distract him again…

    • Cliff

I get distracted by quarters on the dock… I count them, one , two, three oh a duck , geese , a panther ,old McDonald had a farm , hay Macarena!

      • Alex

        Ha. Welcome to ADDBoater.
Or, should I say, welcome to ADD, boater.
        Nah. Its welcome ADD boater.

        Squirrel!

  3. Dave Clyne

I go to Woody Boat Shows so I don’t have to look at stuff like that. Call me a snob. Sheesh !

  4. Sean

I don’t know how well it would fare in the judging…. I don’t think it came from the factory like that.

Not that OE original condition is important to Judges or anything…. Do you think the ACBS will add a “mod” or “hot rod” class under their general headings?

  5. m-fine

As much as a big tripple represents the 1930’s and a Riviera the 1950’s, this thing simply screams 1979. Add thick facial and chest hair, undersized shorts, and tube socks and you are there.

    • Alex

Plus, a gold chain necklace and a can of Tab (Fresca will do in a pinch), and a splash of Brut. With your T/A 6.6 looking on from the parking lot.

      • Kentucky Wonder

Alex, I have a fridge drawer full of Tab that someone gave us as a joke. I’ll bring some to you next month when we make our way to St. Ignace/Hessel/Cedarville.

        • Alex

Mmmmmmm. Chateau TAB 1979 from your private cellar. But I’d hate to impose. Save it for a special celebration. Birth of a grandchild or something. Hessel calls for beer.

          • Mike W

It goes bad after time. But would you notice the difference?

          • Kentucky Wonder

OK, so I know that Bell’s is the proper play here. Not whether to go with Oberon, Lakes Lager, or another specific brew. But if we cannot find any on our marathon trip to the UP, will Molson Golden do?

  6. John Baas

I like going to classic car shows. Custom and Hot Rod shows…no thanks. Boats are like that, too. One thing for sure…the new ACBS judging rules will bring more tats and piercings to the shows! Talk about classy….

  7. Bill

I think what differentiates “Us” from other boaters is an appreciation of boats as a “art” form, not for their play or utilitarian uses. This truly qualifies.

  8. Kentucky Wonder

Forrest Gump (or boat show judges): “Sorry we had a fight at your Black Panther party.”

The airbrushed panther is like a modern interpretation of a boat seen at the Hessel show a couple years ago. It had a huge, wooden duck head sticking up from the bow decking. Definitely unique, but not necessarily appealing. Falls under the “Whatever floats your boat” category. If factory originality is a goal, it will not win anything, but it has a chance if there is a People’s Choice or Most Unique award.

  9. Jack Schneiberg

It pretty much seems to me that we have these shows to show off the boats – regardless of the vintage. We also judge the boats based on guidelines (ACBS) in a number of different categories and ages – and that is for the boat owners as well as the spectators. When either one of these factions stop coming (spectators or/and owners) we will have an answer on what should be at the shows or not. A kind of law of supply and demand. I love vintage wood boats of any age……but there does seem to come a time when they all start looking a little bit the same if I’ve been to too many shows in a row.

    • Walt

So to the question at hand, boats like this are definitely needed at boat shows. Enough already with the over-restored Chris Crafts, Garwoods and Hackers. Seeing and hearing boats like this at the show are what make me smile.

  10. Paul H.

I am no expert on judging, but I can say it would be eligible to be judged. Now, since there is no class for customs or resto mods, it would not do well. The biggest thing is that it is now defined as an eligible boat, which definition in our prior classes was reserved for wood-only construction from 1976 and later.

If that silly “duck boat” U22 that showed up at Petoskey in 2010 was allowed, there is absolutely no reason this shouldn’t be. Sheesh……taste (good and bad) is not confined to any era or material. Look at the tasteless, overwrought cars of the late ’50’s and many of the fiberglass and some wood boats that aped those efforts? They may be interesting, but no one accused them of being tasteful.

  11. Paul H.

As a general comment, I am no fan of airbrushing fancy, detailed graphics of various clichéd themes on cars, motorcycles, boats or much else for that matter. Despite the recent popularity, I feel much the same way about tattoos. But, there is an undeniable skill involved in completing this work. The fact that I don’t like it does not diminish the talent needed to produce the work. I have no personal desire to own this boat, (or get a tattoo) but I would go and look at this boat down on the dock at a show – why not?

I think variety is an important component to shows of all types. Would you go to a show that was restricted to U22’s and Resorters? I would rather go to a show with variety and broad representation – in both boats and people.

    “…you say it’s a 1979 ‘Sex Panther’? What could I possibly do with a ‘Sex Panther’…Good GOD!!”

      “Cruise chicks.
      You know, meet ’em. Girls.
      Try to pick ’em up.
      Then suck face.
You know, kiss. Suck face. You kiss.”

      – Billy Ray Jr.

  13. rob

I think we flatter ourselves by believing that the owner of such a boat would want to hang around a bunch of old guys at an ACBS show for a weekend.

  14. floyd r turbo

M-Fine — I’ll have to borrow some of your chest hair. Where’s my registration form, I’m in – but mine was already a classic (1966). Btw, you can have the tube socks – I think that’s an upstate NY thing. Too hot in the south.

  15. Chad

I think the class should be “Floyd’s Glass Class”. Extra points awarded for period correct paraphernalia, depth of shag carpet and groovy paint jobs.

  16. Kelly Wittenauer

Not my cup of tea – but welcome to the show Panther. I enjoy the variety. This debate reminds me of a car show last summer. I commented to the owner of an impeccable convertible about the fun of riding top down on a beautiful day. He replied that he “never lowers the top, that would cause wrinkles in the vinyl”. We didn’t win anything, as the judges weren’t sure what to think of this. But most of the spectators enjoyed it, as did we.

    • Kelly Wittenauer

Not sure why my pics never work on the first try

      • Cobourg Kid

Kelly the secret is make sure the photo is is under 1 mg, or it won’t load. …. The info is hidden at the bottom of the page

By the powers of Greyskull! This is a Corvette Summer, Dazed and Confused nightmare coming to life!! Jack Black needs to scream some rad Ronnie James Dio song on its bow, while Solid Gold Dancers make out in the back!!!

If someone has the guts to float that thing, after telling the person who painted that, that they did a good job, Then I have the guts to allow it into the club……………

But personally, I could see Paul Harrison, with his Grizzley Adams hair and beard, and Karens “Farrah Faucet” feathered wave, blasting across the waves while the 8 track blares Kiss Dynasty……Buy it man!!!

You guys are with me, I know you are……………

  18. Mike

Matt or anyone that an lend some guidance, who, where do I go with my woody to service it at Lake Arrowhead,Calif.? Desperate for someone who knows woodies, engines, etc.thanks in advance!

  19. Dane

There is no question that this boat is “eligible”. After all it is a 1979 and not a Pontoon. The question that I have is “what is it eligible for?”
Would this be a “Late Classic-Preserved-Runabout” or maybe “Late Classic-Restored-Utility”? There’s 4 potential award catagories right there. Or will there be a new award catagory for “Rear Engine Inboard Power” to accomodate IO, V drive, and Jet?

  20. matt

Hi Mike, there was a huge show there this past week, I would recoment you join the SoCal ACBS chapter http://www.socalacbs.com/ They are a fantastic group, are always at lake Arrowhead and know where to go for help.

  21. floyd r turbo

You left out the “mullet factor”, “business in the front, party in the back” and if you’re not follically challenged like me, “chest hair graphics optional”. These shows should be much more interesting now, at least photographically.

    • Kentucky Wonder

AHHHH!!! My eyes! My eyes!!! Floyd, how could you do this to us?!?!?

Is that stenciled spray-on body hair? God, I do NOT want to know. Awful, just awful.

      • floyd r turbo

Just consider yourselves lucky that I cropped it before sending, lol.

  22. John Baas

By the way…where IS the Woody Boater Connection? Boat Buzz is all I get on the right side.

Groovin’ on down soon to ACBS boat show launch ramps…(buckle up for safety).

    Can you dig it?

    • Alex

I gave a girl a ride in my wagon
She crawled in and took control
She was tired ’cause her mind was a-draggin’
I said, get some sleep and dream of rock and roll

‘Cause like a princess she was layin’ there
      Moonlight dancin’ off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She’s gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that’s all right with me

Her young face was like that of an angel
Her long legs were tanned and brown
Better keep your eyes on the road, son
      Better slow this vehicle down

‘Cause like a princess she was layin’ there
      Moonlight dancin’ off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van
And that’s all right with me

I put her out in a town that was so small
You could throw a rock from end to end
A dirt-road main street, she walked off in bare feet
      It’s a shame I won’t be passin’ through again

‘Cause like a princess she was layin’ there
      Moonlight dancin’ off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van
And that’s all right with me

This particular boat should be allowed in every show that takes place in a Walmart parking lot. It would look great parked next to this:
