Gar Wood being launched at Sierra Boat Co. Friday, – Photo Herb Hall, Not three Gar Woods ready to go! All V 12’s

Fellow Woody Boaters Martin and Theresa Anderson report in from South Lake Tahoe with a very complete story on this weekends fantastic show. We got reports in from fellow Woody Boater Herb Hall from Sierra Boat Co on Friday that boats were going in and heading out to the show. WOW.. What a wonderful setting for a wonderful show.. Thanks Matt, the Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter of the ACBS hosted the South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic July 26-26 at the Tahoe Keys Marina. This was the seventh annual show  benefiting local charities. This year’s show theme was Freedom of the Forties honoring WWII veterans and show casing the wooden boat manufacturer’s contributions to winning the war. The chapter produced a beautiful printed program showcasing the 71 entries.Judging included restored, preserved, repowered, and modified classes, with boats on display manufactured from 1913 to 2013.

    If any of you have never been out to lake Tahoe, its worthy of what ever it costs to go and stay. The collection of boats that show up from all over the US is always on a very very high standard. This is our Pebble beach area. The South Lake Tahoe show is a fun gathering, and gives you a taste of whats around locally, the big Concourse de elegance is INSANE. Absolutely insane. To win that top award is a HUGE deal because of the competition and focus of the national judges. Win that, and the ACBS show and you know you have done a good job with your boat. Some may wine and moan, but its nice to know there is a top end of shows if thats what your into. Not to mention the light there and setting is spectacular.       I agree. Sure Tahoe shows seem like a playground for the wealthy who source out their restorations.. but shows like those drive home the importance of keeping boats (mostly) original. We all cringe at people doing back yard modifications to rare boats – trying to turn everything into ‘Gentlemens Racers’. We can’t control it as much as we can’t ignore it. If that’s your thing, then cool. But I like that these shows inspire the rest of us to preserve history and not rewrite it.

        The problems with your line of thinking are too long to list, but let’s start with the fact that these boats were originally built by backyard hacks who took aircraft engines and rewrote history rather than preserved it. All the Liberty and Rolls engines should be pulled out of those boats and put back in aircraft where they historically belong, right?

        Also, a wood boat modified to be a gentleman’s racer is at least still a wood boat. I can’t say the same thing about a Tahoe boat with a fiberglass bottom. There’s no history being preserved there and certainly no originality. Just making life easy for those who want awards to stroke their egos.

          Hey pal, there’s no fuss. I’m all for keeping these boats afloat and doing modern 5200, WEST, (fiberglass if you like to make life hard down the road). I am on team “Preservation”. And that’s where I like to be. I think you’ll find many people feeling the same for cars, aircraft, etc. And then there are the hot rodders.. not my thing, but there is a place for it and has been since the early automotive days. Let’s hug it out brother. I am not telling people what to do with their boats. I just appreciate the guys who restore their boats down the the nats ass for originallity. I wasn’t around to see how they came out of the factory.

    Nice pictures. Many of these great boats are regularly at the Tahoe Concours show. However, never saw Pinks before or any others of that finned model continental with the optional hard top. I wonder if there are other pictures of this model showing the hard top more clearly, and how many of the 190 produced, came with the optional top?

    It appears that there is a gap between the front of the top and the windshield? In any event a very cool and unusual boat.

      as it turns out,the concours list of boats came out today, and the description of Pinks indicates that only 4 of the 190 of this model came with the hard top. rarer than i thought.

    The first photo of “Big Boy” is not “Big Boy” my bad. It is actually “Dispatch” a 1931 33′ Gar Wood Model 33-50 Baby Gar. Originally powered by a Liberty V12, it is now powered by a Rolls Royce Meteor.

    Even though I already have a rebuilt 1947 Gray for my 41 CC I was wondering if Scripps ever made a 4 cylinder?

    I was wondering if anyone knew any info about AKS. She was in my mother-in-laws family from the time she was built until about the 60s I believe. She has been wondering about what happened to the AKS and I’m trying to find out for her. TIA
