Fellow hall of famer Charles Mistele gets Miss America IX ready for her part in the show!

Ya know that special magical place you have pictured in your head of what a perfect classic boat universe should look like? And despite all your travels they all fall a bit short.. NOT HERE! This is the sort of place that until now only lived in my imagination. This is what I always picture as Woodyboaterville. It’s all here and for a moment in time, this weekend, it’s Antique and Classic boat heaven. If you are with in a 10 hr drive. LEAVE NOW! The setting is perfect, the over 120 perfect boats are… mmmmm whats the word…. PERFECT! The folks here are beyond welcoming and make the entire event….. mmmmm PERFECT!

The Lymans are here. What a wonderful couple!

The Lymans are here. What a wonderful couple!

We arrived around 1 PM to boats being put in the water, and the gang all coming in from all over the country. Its great to see folks again.. Funny thing, I see more of some our fellow Woody Boaters at shows than I do people in my own town.. I suppose in a deep philosophical way, you all are my neighbors. We just happen to live in a neighborhood that moves around from backyard to backyard.. And this weekend…is all set to be one…..mmm what is that word I am looking for?

Jack Beatley is here with one INSANE Sea Sled. We are calling it now! This boat is getting an award. Its .....PERFECT!

Is that Ray McFarlands century in the last picture? Love the Sea Sled. See everyone tomorrow!

    Darn, DARN!

I had planned on going to this show. It looks PERFECT!

Oh well, the weekend is full of guests coming to get a ride on American Beauty so I guess in a way we will have our own show.

    Have a PERFECT weekend!

  3. m-fine

I am here, but somebody needs to turn up the heat! It is 38 degrees, and so am stuck wearing shorts!

  4. Paul H.

The show won’t really get going until we wet M-fine’s fine Penn Yan this morning, a wee bit behind our hastily assembled schedule. You see, trailers have these things called “wheel bearings” and they apparently need at least semi-epochal maintenance, lest they fail on the road while heading to a boat show……..

  5. Sean

Today’s header with Chris Bullens Clarion Gold Cup boat “Riot” looks….. well,…perfect! (and dry inside) 🙂

I am having trouble posting pictures from my “upgraded” phone, so you are just going to have to hop in the car and see it for yourself.

There is one of more of everything here except I have not yet found the beer tent or Hall of Fame Inductee Matt.

that sea sled is BAD AZZZ. hope you can do a story on that soon. that is one type of boat you HAVENT done a story on yet ( i dont think you have yet anyway). everyone have fun at the show. did the comment from paul h. meant his trailer bearings went bad?

    • Paul H.

yes, as a matter of fact. But, they were M-fine’s trailer bearings, not mine. Rich Lepping at the wheel with me riding shotgun, and a plume of smoke signified the latest in this lamentably predictable pattern of roadside disruptions. When will it end?

It would be incredibly challenging to write a more comprehensive and absorbing article about Albert Hickman and his Sea Sleds, or any, of his other astounding innovations, without stepping all over “Damned by Faint Praise” an astounding article written by David Sideman that appeared way/ way back in the May/June 1991 issue of Wooden Boat Magazine

To give you just a taste here is a snippet of Sideman’s work:

“William Albert Hickman was one of the first men to achieve high speeds on water without resorting to high power. He proved that a hull could be made to go faster by forcing air under it, invented the surface piecing propeller, designed and devised tactics for the world’s first high performance motor torpedo boats, discovered that propellers generated lift, effectively used counter rotating props before anyone else, built the first high speed aircraft carrier and patented ideas for lifting strakes, sponsons, non-tripping chines, and the prop riding speedboat.”

Gotta glitchya some O that? Go to the wooden boat magazine store http://www.woodenboatstore.com/product/WoodenBoat_magazine_Issue_100_DIGITAL and download a copy.

Nice shots. I saw Chris Smith’s Skiff in the background of one of the pics. Say hi from all of his Michigan Chapter friends.

Can you get a Sea Sled to turn? With the twin hulls it would seem like it would want to go straight all the time except maybe at low speed which may answer my own question.
