trophy Bpats on Boardwalk

Since the shows’ inception in 1988, dedicated chapter volunteers have created a handmade miniature mahogany “transom” plaques, which each participant receives.

Thanks to fellow Woody Boater Allen Papendick for being first to report in and steal the Clayton thunder on a Monday, we have some great shots from this weekends “Boats on The Boardwalk. This is an annual event that is set in a completely different setting than most shows in an amazing little town. Home of Hagerty Insurance and some amazing folks. Take it away Allen.

It was a beautiful day for the 28th annual “Boats on the Boardwalk” show sponsored by the Water Wonderland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. The show is nestled along the boardwalk on the Boardman River in downtown Traverse City Michigan at the bottom of West Grand Traverse Bay. Held on the same weekend as the Traverse City Film Festival makes a good showing for the many visitors.

It looks like they had a great display of diverse boats in what is truely a great venue. When we took Water Lily up ther a few years ago, I was also impressed with their release process after the show. It was a great way to handle the current of the river and reminded me of launching aircraft off a naval carrier!

Looks like another great local gathering. Thanks for the coverage.

While it is Monday morning and I need to go back to the office, today is flip the page day on my Bob “Have I Got A Calendar For You” Kays calendar. I wonder what lake Hapotcong treasure awaits for August.

    Thanks for the report Allen!

Looks like a fabulous event. I know you can’t show us all the boats at the show, but this looks like the dash of a ’57-’59 CC Continental (Or maybe a ’58-’59 Capri). They are very close to my heart. Do you have a shot of it that you can add to the comments section?

Closest to your favorite of my photos is Ed’s 1960 Continental “Second Love”

Troy, Click on the link to the Water Wonderland website then go to pictures of the 2012 Boats on the Boardwalk and there is a little better picture of the Capri. Ours is the upside down version of that, or maybe theirs is upside down..

        Thanks Ed!

I have seen that boat before. Chad sent me pictures one time. Very unique the way the fins are varnished not painted. Love It!

My mistake, thought this one was included. 58 21′ from Lake Leelanau. 300 hp Cadillac Crusader by Carl and Rosalie Gaertner

Thanks Woody Boater and especially Allen for the great coverage of Boats On The Boardwalk. It really was a perfect day and a great collection of boats showed up. I am so glad that Allen took the time to take pictures and turn in the story. I always regret not taking more pictures. There should be a couple videos available soon. One from a drone that flew the length of the boardwalk and another from a kayak that floated past. Thanks to The Water Wonderland chapter for putting on another fantastic show and special thanks to the judges for awards for Cask-Away and Second Love. It was Mike and Melissa’s first show with Going Steady after a long long winter of work on it and it was great having them there. Grand Daughter Ellee helped out in the registration tent again and Grand Daughter Lauren was there with her ever present Camera getting some great Shots. Thanks to Dave and Kris for getting Second Love to the dock and back to the trailer, and to both boys for helping to release boats after the show. Leanne was very busy on the launch ramp backing trailers in to load boats and that process went smoothly with her help. We are already looking forward to next year.

Special thanks today to contributor Allen Papendick for sending us this great report and photos. An amazing selection of classic boats at a perfect venue for viewing. – Texx

Also nice work Matt to get this posted today. Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes yesterday at Woody Boater HQ as we were both on the road. #impressed

Looks like our Chapter pulled off another great show, and dogged the weather bullet by one day. Sunday brought strong wings, and thunderstorms up there, and even a tornado just 10 miles west at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.
Thanks, Allen for a great report.
Who won the best FiberClassic awards???

  7. Chad

Great selection of boats. The folks in the Water Wonderland Chapter know how to put together a great event. Thanks for sharing, Allen!

  8. Allen

John and Amanda Verderwheel won Best Classic Glass with their 1965 15′ Larson All American. Sorry John I didn’t get a good photo angle for your boat and I’m having trouble reading the correct spelling for you name on the Winners sheet.

  9. Reddog

Traverse City.is a nice place to have a boat show. Lots of activities in downtown and many nice lakes nearby. Allen please let us know when the videos will be available. 6. Days til Vessel. Woo hoi.

    • Allen

Any video was done by someone else, I don’t know who. My guess would be a filmmaker from the film festival which occurred the same day.

  10. Gene porter

The notable shortagt of Lymans in Allen’s great portfolio is inderstandable given the great collection of mid-west Lymans that took over the docks in Clayton – except of course for Frank Norton’s “Best Lyman” from New England .

We participated in the Traverse City show last year, and had a great time. Eau! Canada even won an award for Best Transom. The Friday before was a blast, boating around Lake Leelanau and into the town of Leland. Here is a link to a set of photos from the Play Day, organized by Captain Dennis Mykols…

If there is an under-appreciated aspect of the scene around the show, it has to be the Farmers Market going on in the adjacent parking lot. Simply amazing selection of fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheeses, artwork and craftwork. Best market scene I have ever experienced.

Thanks for covering this show Allen. Someday, someday, I’ll made it to this neighboring show. Looks like fun. TC is a wonderful venue. Great beer pubs and artisan pizza within walking distance. Great to see the water level in that river up so much. A couple years ago, it looked grim.
