It floats!

Behind the scenes here at Woody Boaterville this very cool Red And White Express is getting talked about.  For a Buy it now price of $59,753 is actually not a bad price if you are about to restore one. Why its $59,753 is a very odd number, why not 59,752? Anyway, if you read the description it does sound like this was all done right.

Clean and nice. Single engine! I would prefer a duel engine on this boat though. But still very nice

    Is the windshield frame actually bigger or is it just built up more? I have a frame. Never heard of two styles.

    The built up windshield frame with a canvas Navy top was an option. The 1948 I’m restoring has these options and a varnished transome. Don’t think the varnish is correct. At least it’s not mentioned on my hull card. I’ll be following this one on EBay. Buy It Now! Coolest boat on the planet and they have a head.

      Don’t overlook the “head” option. A hot day drinking Arnold Palmers make that option a must!!!!!

    It seems Chris craft raised the windshield in the later ones. I googled red and white and there a quite a few pictures of the boats with the wood underneath the windshield raising it up.

    Don’t do it! Those red and whites are a gateway cruiser. You buy it and have lots of fun and next thing you know you will buy a 55′ Constellation.

    I think the Chrysler Royal straight 8 is a rare power choice for these boats as well. I have rarely seen one in a CC, though I know they were offered, and a few 25′ Sportsman’s had them. I have one in my Gar and it is a wonderful, torquey and very smooth engine. I believe the engine would be very well matched with the boat.

    These boats are just damn cool, no two ways about it. Hurry up and get yours done, Watson!

    I’m the guy who’s about to restore one I’m crunching the numbers and the restoration on mine should come in at $59,750. Not including labor of course. I’d be foolish to buy a Red and White already in perfect condition and sacrifice all the wooden boat masachistic torture and fun I’ll get to have for the next two years or so. Who would do that?

    It brings a twinge to my heart to remember what a privilege it was to bring Little Nell II “back”. Even more so when her former owner (at 94 years young) flew down to Florida from Detroit to take the captain’s chair and drive her “girl”. Great memories.

    I understand the advantage of the raised windshield but, to me, it spoils the look of the boat. It could be removed as it is the same windshield frame.

    The engine pictured is not a Chrysler but a “Dynaflash” which is a Buick engine. Probably even more rare than the Chrysler someone mentioned. The Red & Whites are really cool!! But not for me. The first picture of the boat appears to be at Pete Beauregard’s in Algonac, the former site of the Chris Craft factory. I think I saw this boat “in process” at the Guldemond’s a couple of years ago. I don’t know who the owner of that boat was/is. Very nice boat!!

    After looking at the eBay listing I can see clearly that it is a Chrysler engine. The boat has a Wisconsin WN registration so now I doubt that it’s the one I saw at Guldemond’s. Still a very nice boat. Good luck bidding!!

      The boat you saw at Guldemond’s is a Sports Express, not a Red & White, and belongs to Bob Guldemond. He is still working on it.

    WN is a Washington Registration number. It is in Olympia; let’s wait for Dick Dow to chime in, he is Mr Red & White, knows them all, and their history. I had the privilege of running his a few times. His has history of working at the Gold Cup races here in the ’50’s.

    The raising of the windshield has to do with sight line at the helm and the sides are an attachment point for the Navy top. I see this one is missing the top frame and hardware. My son agrees with Jim that they look better without the raised windshield. I don’t mind it. I think it makes it look more cruiserish.

    I know that particular boat intimately – and will be glad to answer any questions anyone has about it. The raised windshield was a dealer-installed option on these boats. They did not come with a varnished transom from the factory, with one exception – the last one ever built was special order and had a varnished transom – so when I restored “Tango” years ago I did a bright transom.

    Dick Dow, I’m restoring Red and White hull number X-25-289. What is your estimate of how many of this model remain today. I know they had rot problems due to the unvented covering on the cockpit sides and the fact that they were large and not easily stored. Early on they were nicknamed “stink pots” due to the moldy smell they developed over time.

      Dan, In a quick count there are approximately 10 to 12 on the water with another one or two close to being on the water and 20 or so accounted for that are in serious need.     Here is a photo of my grandfather’s red and white which was taken on the St-Laurence River in the early 1950s near Lery QC, where the boat was purchased by the EBay seller back in 1990. Could it be the same boat? My grandfather used to service his boats in Lachine QC which is just across the river from Lery QC. At the time, my grandfather owned the largest Chrysler dealership in eastern Canada which might explain the rare Chrysler engine! My father remembers that the Mink in the picture had Chrysler engine. On another note, my grandfather’s neighbor also had a Red and White CC Express. In 1957 my grandfather traded up the Mink for 26’ CC Sports Express Red and White.

    The Red & White Express was available pre and post war in single and twin engine configuration. Of the 302 Post War Red & Whites built, 102 were twin engine boats (all with Chris Craft K’s except for one, hull no. 295 shipped to Lakeside, Ohio in May 1948 that was powered with 150 hp Packards) and 200 were single engine boats. Of the single engine boats built, 129 boats shipped with the Chrysler Royal Straight 8, 30 shipped with the W, 38 shipped with the MS and three shipped with the KS.

    While the majority of the post war single engine boats shipped with the Chrysler Royal Straight 8, there are very few remaining with the Royal and hull no. 154 (eBay Boat) may be the only one still running the Royal.

      I just picked one up a week ago and already started the restoration on it. Original, one owner 1957 with the original 292 Ford Interceptor. Her name is ‘Camille’, and she’s a complete time capsule.

    Phil B – That is the same boat Ted purchased in 1990. He decided to get one after he and his wife went for a ride with us on “Tango” the previous summer. Aaron’s numbers on production, the survivors and original engine configurations/options are accurate, though we occasionally seem to uncover a few more dusty examples. The restoration on the Ebay boat is top-notch. I was actually the first person to “ride” in it as it was towed from the over-the-water-shop where the hull was done to the lift that put it on the trailer to go to the owners shop to be finished. It did not leak a drop on that first dip back in the water. I questioned Ted’s determination to put a Royal back in the boat, but he was determined, so I lost that argument. I prevailed on the bright transom and correct canvas on the decks discussions… 🙂 My wife Kathy and I did the upholstery.

    Great boats! I never should have let go of “Tango”.
