So, on ebay here is another fun little outboard project for ya. A fun starter for your high strung teenager to work on over the winter, or better yet, with the speed kids do things these days, maybe they will have it restored by this weekend. But, look a little closer at this little gem..

Bingo, this little tomahawk is sitting on a vintage Chris Craft trailer. Now, here is the thought. Buy the boat for the kid. Sell the trailer and recoup a bunch of the cost of the boat. The trailer doesn’t really match the boat, but for anyone out there with a small Chris Craft, this is gold. OK, maybe yellow and blue. Right here on Ebay. I have to admit I don’t think I would have caught that. This guy did post a lot of nice pictures though.
I have to say his Johnson is in great shape for it’s age. ’54ish?

I got a little Chris trailer that way some 10 or so years ago…I spotted it under a small boat…When the auction was over, I asked the seller if he wanted the trailer and he said, “No” It took a year or so to get it out from under that boat and then some negotiation to get it from Indiana to Florida. Finally I got it and had the guy who paints my old car to give it a good sanding and paint it the right colors. I was going to put it under an original boat kit which I never got so I sold it to Jim Shotwell who was making replica Chris Craft kits at the time.
That is a cool boat….never heard of them? Motor in nice condition but underpowered for that rig. Good project for a kid like Matt suggest.

I used to own a Fleetmaster trailer made by Alloy Marine that was nearly identical to the trailer pictured above. It came with my 1958 Lyman and I assumed it was the original trailer for the boat. I think Alloy Marine was located in Algonac Michigan, so was it an affiliate of Chris Craft? I’ve seen a few of them with other Lymans and Thompsons. Just curious.

I believe the trailer manufacturer’s name was Alloy Products and, yes, they were sold as Chris Craft products in CC’s ads for kit boats in the late 1950s. (See Legend of Chris Craft, pg. 167 & pic on pg. 198) They didn’t have a full single-piece axle but, instead, had stub axles welded on the free end of swing arms which, unfortunately, had a tendency to crack those welds. If you get it, I recommend you inspect the swing arm mounts carefully. Ed
That 1955 Johnson (with controls from 59 but who’s counting) is the perfect match for that same era Tomahawk! Great rig for a 14 year old to pretend he’s James Dean of the waterways!
