There Are Jobs, And Then There Are Jobs For Your Soul!

,

Just another day in the office! NOT!

I will be honest here, for the past 35 years, I have not worked a day, so I suppose talking about a job may not qualify me as an expert. Oh sure I am a designer, creative person as a profession. But never have felt like it’s work. It’s more of a passion that I would do regardless of pay. The same can be said about working in the Classic Boat world.

Working with your hands, heart and soul!

Its something you would do because your heart is really doing the work. Now, if you are this sort of person, there is an opening at one of the top places to work and live in the Woody Boat universe.

Love tools?

Yes, a dream job, Senior Restoration/Boat Builder on Lake George at one of the most historic boat shops in the culture of classic boating. Halls Boat Co. And this is the oddest thing, they will pay you like its a job.. HAAA! SUCKERS. If I could I would take that bet in a second. You literally would be taking a job back in time, and yet paid in 2017 dollars. The Halls boat Co, is expanding and so is the passion up on Lake George.

Man oh man! This would be your office

More office space

Ya, thats a work environment for all your senses

I wonder if the HR dept would mind if I showed up to work naked and just rolled around on the boats. Rubbing all the mahogany all over me, sniffing and hugging it all. Wait, ya, this may not sound good on the first interview.

Imagine working in an environment that is a living museum, with all the modern tools you need, and working on boats that have been in the same family for decades. AHHHHHHH! Then you get to go out on test drives on LAKE GEORGE! My head is going to pop! You get to work and live in heaven, while saving boats, and making people happy! And did I mention on Lake George! hands down one of the top 10 Lakes in the world to visit.

This couyld be your commute? Live on the lake, take a boat to the office!

Take the express lane! Avoid the traffic!

And you would be able to live there. Be a local, and complain about all the weekenders. That could be you. So? Interested? Working at a dead end job? Stuck doing what you love but in a dead end boring town? Has your spouse bitched about your varnish smell just one too many times? Well? All ya gotta do is email or call Debbie at Halls. And you are one step closer to a life change, a new way of life.

This is a great opportunity for all the readers currently stuck in Florida. Living on Lake George you will get to experience all four seasons, there are no blood sucking insects for half the year, and year round the lake is 100% gator free!

  2. Matt
    Matt says:

See, I had not even thought of the Gator Free thing. We should also contact the tourism board of Lake George. Its a huge marketing idea. Visit Lake George, NO GATORS!

Does it really pay enough to live on the lake? Can they take “Senior ” out of the title? How many days a week can I go to lunch by boat and not return and still have a job?

    • Wilson
      Wilson says:

Come now…You know you love the gators like we do….how many times have you ridden thru the Dora Canal looking for a Gator so you could take his or her picture ?

      • Dave
        Dave says:

Gators……and about 15 other spiecies of this and that lurking here and there as well as 3500 year old cypress trees where another umpteen hundred additional species hang out!

        m-fine says:

So Wilson, how many times have you been hot and decided to cool off with a refreshing dip in the Dora Canal or the aptly named DEAD River?

No problem in Lake George since there are no predatory lizards or venmouse snakes lurking in the murk. Heck there is no murk to lurk in. And, as a bonus you won’t even have to worry about being hot for 8-9 months each year.

    Jack Schneiberg says:

Do you think they have heat in the shop? Mine is barely adequate and today the high may hit 42

    Rick says:

Well first I have to pay for my daughter’s wedding next year, sell my business, sell my house, go to Wooden Boat School for a couple of years to learn how to put the boats back together (I figure I can get them apart fine) and convince my wife I don’t need a psychiatrist (I probably do). Think they can hold that position open for an old fat bald guy until 2020? Maybe I’ll just pay them to let me sit in the corner with a beer on weekends in the winter and absorb the woodyness of the place.

Will Halls keep enough of the Lake plowed for vintage iceboat commuting?

  7. Darthtrader

We’ll gladly take the skeeters, gators, Hurricanes and humidity. Not having to “winterize” our boats, or quit boating for half the year due to “Hard Water” conditions is a way of life down here. Besides that; gators are delicious and recycle nicely into purses, belts, boots, and shoes. People in Florida have never seen a snowplow, or experienced the thrill of a black ice patch. The only ice we need comes in small chunks and fits nicely into a Scotch glass. Think of all the money we save on winter coats, gloves, scarves, and winter tires. Come on down in March, we’re having a Beach Party!

I feel like Matt…..never work but always working….I am leaving the tenants to take care of themselves again today as I am…..you guessed it…..GOING BOATING!

Had the chance to go to Lake George for the first time last week. Beautiful Lake!! Did not know about Halls boat co. If I had I would have visited, maybe applied for a job. If I did not love the U P of Michigan so much, I would spend more time there.

I agree with Rick it would be a dream job! I need 5yrs or more to get ready. Kids thru collage 3 weddings.
Then also need an 1 acre or more on the Lake to build barn to hold all my CRAP.
Second thought I can’t afford to move.
It’s my dream job! Lake George would be a beautiful place to live. Winters would be awesome I’m sure.
Hall’s is a great place to visit. Like I said before it’s a time capsule in the barns there.

There is something to be said about older folks are saying this is a dream job. If you are young and looking around for a great future and rewarding job, this is a huge winner. Think of the life you would be able to live. In places like this, these oportunities dont come along in your lifetime. Imagine raising a family on the lake? What a wonderful gift to your children.

    Ollon says:

I spent big chunks of summer in Diamond Point on Lake George as a kid and my Dad always had our boat serviced at Halls. It’s fun to think about but after 30 years of living in SoCal I don’t think I could handle those desolate winters anymore.

  13. R. Harris
    R. Harris says:

I grew up on Lk. George, the northern end. Had my first boat on the lake when I was 13, moved away when I was 20. The winters were just too much. They’re not nearly as bad today. The cost of living on the lake is outrageous so I came back about 14 years ago and bought a camp in the mountains, taxs are cheaper, and I still can boat on Lk. George with the benefit of 125 mile long Lake Champlain on the other side of the mountain just a few miles away if I get bored. And to beat the winters I just use it as a summer retreat. The only disadvantage to swimming in Lake George is frost bite in August.

Any news on all the changes at the Antique Boat Center? I heard that they have moved and many of the old heads their have moved on and one of the employees has opened a competitive shop in the same general area.

    • Kentucky Wonder
      Kentucky Wonder says:

Dropped off our Greavette there for winterization and storage yesterday. They are in a new location, very near the Ohio River, and a lot of new boat dealerships and marinas. The new location should help them, as hundreds of boaters will pass their shop each day during boating season.

    Troy in ANE says:

The “Dream Job” can be deceiving. In my late teens I LOVED planes and flying, have a lot of mechanical ability so I got my A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) license and went to work for an FBO (Fixed Base Operation AKA Airport). After a year of working on planes 5+ days per week I didn’t even want to go flying on the weekends.

Later, in my late 20’s, after working my Snap-on Tools franchise for a number of years I was getting antsy and was looking at different businesses. A woman who owned a local Formula dealership was looking for someone to mentor and eventually buy her out. In speaking with her at a boat show she asked it I liked boating. Of course I enthusiastically expressed that I loved it. At this time she gave me some of the best advice I have ever received. “Don’t get into this business, you won’t have time to use your own boat.” (Paraphrased I am sure since that was 3 decades ago.)

Don’t let your “Dream Job” turn your hobby into a “Nightmare”!
