I know for many of you Boston Whalers are a major go to boat. Myself included. I LOVE them, and have owned about every cool model made. In a sense they were the family boat, of the day. Many of us had our first real boating experience on one. One of the issues today for Whaler though is they are not all that affordable like back in the day.
There is of course the argument of resale, which is true. But to me, the classic Whaler deigns are the trick. They are like a 911, fine tuned for decades.
But at some point Whaler stepped out of the sameness zone, and made the wonderful Outrage series from 1970-1982. Lovingly called Banana Boats, I suppose it has to do with the curve of the hull. But I LOVE them. In a way they are the Porsche 928 to the 911 metaphor.
Now, I know I am not alone in this, because folks bury big money into these to keep them alive. And here lies the point of this story. Are these classics? YES, without question, and a whaler deserves a best in class, and a place at any cool dock with Woody Boats. Where as that Pontoon boat just drains the cool factor.
So this one on ebay ignited my lust for these. Yes its over $40K which seems a tad high, or is it? I have seen these at $90K and most are $10K-$20K But not as nice as this all original masterpiece. So it invites another bigger question. Are you still reading? No.. HA..
If a new plastic boat is 40K-60K, and will drop 20K in one year, and more on and on, and look like a pile of junk in 5 years. Why not buy this basically NOS whaler that will hold value, and has cool factor out the wazooo? No computer navigation crap that needs never ending service? Its a center console, and is timeless. And you can pass it on to your kids, and enjoy all the benefits of our amazing classic boat community.
