1972 21′ Boston Banana Whaler Show Winner On Ebay!

ONE SWEET OUTRAGE!

I know for many of you Boston Whalers are a major go to boat. Myself included. I LOVE them, and have owned about every cool model made. In a sense they were the family boat, of the day. Many of us had our first real boating experience on one. One of the issues today for Whaler though is they are not all that affordable like back in the day.

The kids loved this Whaler!

There is of course the argument of resale, which is true. But to me, the classic Whaler deigns are the trick. They are like a 911, fine tuned for decades.

Prototype Ad to dealers 1970. This was a breakt hough design!

But at some point Whaler stepped out of the sameness zone, and made the wonderful Outrage series from 1970-1982. Lovingly called Banana Boats, I suppose it has to do with the curve of the hull. But I LOVE them. In a way they are the Porsche 928 to the 911 metaphor.

Now, I know I am not alone in this, because folks bury big money into these to keep them alive. And here lies the point of this story. Are these classics? YES, without question, and a whaler deserves a best in class, and a place at any cool dock with Woody Boats. Where as that Pontoon boat just drains the cool factor.

man oh man!

So this one on ebay ignited my lust for these. Yes its over $40K which seems a tad high, or is it? I have seen these at $90K and most are $10K-$20K But not as nice as this all original masterpiece. So it invites another bigger question. Are you still reading? No.. HA..

Original finish on the engine

If a new plastic boat is 40K-60K, and will drop 20K in one year, and more on and on, and look like a pile of junk in 5 years. Why not buy this basically NOS whaler that will hold value, and has cool factor out the wazooo? No computer navigation crap that needs never ending service? Its a center console, and is timeless. And you can pass it on to your kids, and enjoy all the benefits of our amazing classic boat community.

Thanks Matt…Because I bought that little Whaler at the Field of Dreams at Tavares this year. Some thought I was nuts but she is pristine…Looks like she just came out of the factory in 1982 when she was built.

21′ outrage, we had them in the USCG, at Gloucester MA we had one with a pair of Evinrude 85hp motors, the boat also had the side tanks along with the belly tank. At Alexandria Bay N we had the same boat but it had twin 70hp Johnsons on it and no side tanks. At Alexandria Bay we also mounted a small fire pump on the back seat.

A friend is picking this one up for me today assuming the weather isn’t too bad. Can’t wait to get back and get it going.

Uh…..no thanks. Maybe it is an East Coast / West Coast thing, but a whaler excites me as much as a brown 1972 Ford Pinto.

The first boat I bought – I was in 8th grade – was a ’64, 13′ Whaler with a 40 Johnson. Same model as Ned’s new boat. I sold it when I graduated college. Lot’s of great memories and adventures in that boat, and I’m always keeping an eye out for another – has to be blue inside – just because…

What more can you say about a Whaler? We bought this 17 ft Super Sport a couple of years ago, and like I said yesterday, it is very different and a limited year production run. We love all the beautiful varnished wood, that just pops in the sunlight.
This 1984 model with its original 1984 h.p. Tower of Power Merc, was a Northern Michigan tender to a larger classic yacht all its life. She is a head turner where ever we go.

Boston Whaler, some say it is the F150 of the Le Chaneaux Islands. Some may disagree and claim its still the U22s but its not.

A true American craftsman owns this Ribside 21. He is reducing his fleet by offering this fine craft for sale. The boat is worth every penny and will only go up in value in the coming years. Yes, the boat is plastic, which means its core will never rot. The teak wood is beautiful and there are a few very subtle ergonomic modifications that make the helm a more comfortable experience for a tall coxswain. Yes, this is a one of kind craft and a true collector piece.
