This Could Be The Coolest Classic Boat Sign Ever! WOW!

Amazing. And at night? AHHHHH!

I saw this little post card on ebay. And what hit me was how absolutely cool this dealership must have been. And that sign. OH GOD, that Sign. This is from a dealership Marine Center, in Lindenhurst NY on Long Island. Sadly now its just some sort of office building. But from aerial views what a cool location for a Boat store. On a main drag, with water behind it.

Oh ya!, the boat, the babe, the sign.. My head is exploding.

Ugh!

The back of the post card

Location Google Maps

AMAZING!

But back to the sign. Look closely. Chris Craft, Jersey Skiffs… And that boat shape.

Ships Wheel, Boat, Neon, Waves. Life Rings. A work of art!

YOU CAN SEE THE POST CARD HERE ON EBAY
AHHHHHHHHHH! And I was excited about the 12 foot Neon Original Chevy sign we just found. Thanks Lowtimers for that one.

Now I understand the source of your stress ! And that’s about as far away from boating as you can get.

Definitely not LockPat. I would suspect Fitz & Lee given geography
    rather than Greavette.

Looks like “Skol” alias “Tempo” considering Guy Lombardo and Long Island. Dig that bow rail and all the other accessories, Miss Marine Center may stay, off with the bow rail. Fitz and Lee would be correct if so.

That sign must have looked impressive, all lit up in neon, kinda like Vegas East. 😎

It is lockpat. The dealership was owned by Howard Davidson who bought lockpat from Joe Van Blerck.

I definitely spoke too soon. At first glance transom appeared to terminate before transition to “boat tail” and I now see the shadow of original registration plate. Will put on my “readers” before spouting off next time.

I can’t believe they filled in that entire moorage basin — that would have been a monumental environmental headache to do here in the Pacific NW from 1970 on. Seems to me that protected moorage would be far more valuable than what bare land value was worth then.

The south shore of Long Island is protected by a barrier beach with the Great South Bay between it and the mainland. The area is covered with canals the developers built for residences. Many ended at Montauk Highway were these business were and there are still many boat dealerships like this extending both east and west of Lindenhurst. As a kid I worked at summer at Don Wright’s a boat broker near this and set up the same way.

What a cool business sign. One could NOT do anything like that today in our town. Go to the city website, and before you get to the pages and pages of regulations and diagrams dictating surface area, font size, pole height etc etc etc…you see this:

    “Signs
The purpose of the Sign Code is to ensure that signs are constructed, erected, and maintained in a safe manner that does not create visual distractions, or hazards for pedestrians or motorists. It also helps our community maintain a neat, clean, orderly, and attractive appearance.”

I find that language a little “goose steppy”.

I find it ironic that the old people who made our local regulations were afforded the luxury of living during times when one was free to create cool signs to promote their businesses which then, years down the road, became icons to treasure and collect.

It reminds me of a bit from an old movie….Neidermeyer the Nazi is berating Flounder….”you’re a goddamn disgrace. Dress that line. Redo those buttons. Straighten that cap. And goddammit, tuck in those pajamas! What’s that on your uniform? A pledge pin? On your uniform?”

That is what it is like getting the ok for a stupid sign in this town. Nobody will be hanging any current business sign in their garage in forty years I can tell you that.

Treasure that Chevy sign for it is a dead breed.

That sign would be worthy of building a huge warehouse to display it. If you’re going to dream, might as well dream in technicolor.

I should have read this post this morning, just flew over Long Island on my way home from Norfolk. Maybe I could have gotten a live picture.

Cool sign! It would be nice if it were in some ones shop, barn, large man cave, or boat house. Sadly it has probably been destroyed. Went Boating Today!!
