Super Special Sandbar Glasses?

I have super powers

You didn’t see this story coming did ya? Just when you thought we had talked about everything on the classic boat planet. I saw the the light…. of a sandbar. Okay, I have been doing this for years but never thought of doing a story on it. Desperate times I suppose.

No glasses

To the right of the flag!

So here is how it works. I have polarized normal green prescription sunglass lenses. The frames are an old pair of Oliver Peoples  that I have had for 25 years. , and when I have them on, the world is a magical place. The clouds are like a technicolor masterpiece. It helps in my time warp thing I like to do.

Clear

See it, to the right of the old tower base

But I have noticed that they help highlight shallow arias. Sandbars. Which the Chesapeake Bay is famous for. Hell, you can run aground in the middle of the bay. So, no depth finder, and being old school boating as it is. The glasses help.

You can have your rose colored glasses, I am choosing green

I tried to capture the effect with my glasses. BTW, the Boatress has officially written me off as insane now. mmmm, only took 35 years!

And when you are not wearing them, they match the feel of the boat if you choose the right frame.

AND NO! NO NO NO!

Nice of you to share this experience with us.

You seem to have forgotten to tell us where we can find a pair of these Super Sandbar Finding Glasses.

    Inquiring minds want to know!

Nothing wrong with this story at all. The right lens for boating and/or fishing is important. Protect your eyes and see stuff in/on the water that that you can’t see with cheap sunglasses. Copper lenses are my favorite.

Do a follow up in about two weeks…by then the algae or whatever the marine growth is will have celebrated summer and fogged up the water so much superman’s x-ray vision wouldn’t help. But those are the ONLY glasses to wear for bay boating.

My wife says I have sunglasses problem. And she’s right. Better than a boat problem. (I have one… and a pontoon-like deck boat that she loves.) But nothing beats a pair of high quality polarized lenses, especially mineral glass lenses. My favorite pair (of, cough, twenty) are a pair of 30-some-year-old Vaurnets. They still make the same pair. Maui Jim is another brand that still uses glass and they’re incredible, even though I (unbelievably) don’t own a pair.

Polarized sunglasses are a must to boat in the Moriches Bay area of Long Island. The sandbars shift so fast and often the Coast Guard actually pulled the markers from the State Channel in front of the Coat Guard Station and before boaters put in personal marker flags it was necessary to thread your way through the bars on your own. Further Moriches Inlet is listed as un-navigatible (sp?) at all times though we all use it daily and again one must thread through the bars and breakers. Without the correct sunglasses almost impossible.

I can’t believe you have sunglasses that old. Mine are usually broken from being sat on, scratched or in most cases at the bottom of the lake!

I have used Maui Jim Polarized (prescription bifocal) sunglasses for 25 years, not just for boating but for driving, hiking, shooting, etc. Driving in the Florida summer afternoon deluge with quality polarized lenses is amazing! No more complete whiteout!

I also wear my polarized, green tint, prescription sunnies when boating. I have always gone with the darker black tint option but on my recent pair I decided to give the green a try and I will never go back. Not only does it highlight sandbars but it also highlights rocks and dramatic changes in depth of any kind. It is such a game changer that I will wear my sunnies even when it isn’t really sunny!

My favorite on water sunglasses are Serengeti with 555nm polarized lenses. They are glass lenses with a greenish tint as well.

Maybe this is why so many Aristo-Crafts have green windshields.

Look through the windshield and see sand bars.

    I always wondered about that.

I found a pic of Matt at the Opera with his glasses that help…

    “highlight shallow arias”
