LET’S GO!

Since I have been running Stinky so far this summer, gotta say a fun racer is, well, fun. And this little racer on ebay today is just perfect. All redone and ready to go. And it’s vintage and has some history. If this was a car it would be a fortune, but because its a boat. Affordable fun for sure, and you can race it. Go to Lake Dora, race the week before, and then drive it to The Palm Garden. And race home after one, okay five too many Jalapeno poppers.

Come on ice cream!

Here is the story off ebay and the link below. – Riot is a 1950 E Service wooden inboard race boat, 18’ long and powered by her original Gray Marine 244 cubic inch Fireball 6 cylinder 165horsepower engine. Built by the Davis Brothers in Mateo, SC, she was originally raced in the Atlantic Coast region, then run as a pleasure racer until acquired by the Lewis family of Clayton, NY. After a minimal restoration by Cedric Maycock, she was entered in early Raceboat Regatta events by Tony Lewis. Present owner bought her from the Lewis family in 1994 and continued to run in vintage events.. The boat and engine is original, with a new bottom, and stringers replaced as needed in 1998.

Her narrow transom with large anti-trip (non trip) chines and concave bottom was the new thing as compared to a rocker keel sort of v bottom shape. She is a Davis Brothers (Vernon and Ralph, uncles to Buddy Davis) boat. They designed her lines and built her hull. Riot is a race boat design that led the way for better racing until higher horsepower and the 3 point hydroplane design was made successful in racing.

I remember Tony running that boat and she knew how to drive it and held nothing back. Let’s just say that there some people that went out for a ride with her and came back in shaking a bit. I remember one time at the show at Ottawa she went out with a couple of other boats for a 3 lap demonstration run. She stayed with the other two until the final back stretch she made the turn and nailed it. Her kerchief blew off and she was gone.

Syd I was fortunate to have that ride with Tony in Ottawa. My first ride in a race boat.

That is a good social distancing boat, but I still prefer designs with more room for passengers and dogs.

You mentioned running Stinky a lot. Is WECATCHEM still out of service for the engine swap?

That is a neat boat. Tom its really cool that you have a picture of riding in it. Matt, you should buy that, then you and the boatress could do exhibition runs.

I remember running with Riot at a couple Clayton Race Boat Regattas in my Davis Built Rock-a-Bye. The Davis Brothers built about 50 E Service boats in the late 40s and early 50s. The copied the Ventnor concave bottom design and they were the boat to beat back in the day. I believe there are only 5 or 6 still left. Jim
