This was the original good book back in around 1915, and Noels book is a wonderful new book for inspiration. And about 500 bucks cheaper!

Neat stuff, and…. since you brought up fonts….and it may have been discussed years ago,……
Is there a commercially available font that mimics the “Chris*Craft” font as on the decals for the side of the boat?.. Late 50’s utility..? Id like to attempt that for the transom boat name and hailing port… and possibly make a fake marina sign for my boat barn…
I made a transom logo for my Uncle’s boat…so I searched and searched fonts that resemble the Chris logo. Two options are Ed’s Market Main Script and P22 Sneaky Pro. Both are free. I did tweak them both by thickening and stretching, etc. But they look pretty good! Then, just incorporate the star to give it that familiarity.

Wow…you struck a cord with this post. As a graphic designer/sign maker for 3 decades…I yearn to step away from the computer and the rat race… A drawing board, a pencil and paper… sounds like heaven.
Followed the link & ordered the book! Was always fascinated watching the sign painters who came to letter the race cars when I was growing up. Our family’s cars were done by Jake Dixson, who saved his vacation from his day job, to spend the month of May lettering cars at “the speedway”.

Back in the day when I would develop business plan presentations, I assembled the data to depict our vision, then amused myself by formatting it using a font with which I knew engineers would feel comfortable, even though they didn’t know what it was. Arial Rounded MT Bold was reminiscent of the ink legends on old blueprints…and I suspect it is the reason I have been drawn to DUNKIN’ DONUTS all these years.

Noel has been doing McCall Boat Works’ transoms for about 20 years now, starting with my first restoration. Our first boat together was RAINMAKER, a 1950 Chris Craft 19 ft racer.
Since then, he has illustrated about 30 plus boats for MBW.
The South Lake Tahoe Boat show started giving awards for Best Transom because of Noel’s work.
McCall Boat Works is very fortunate to have him in Boise, Idaho which is just 100 miles south of McCall.
Noel has become a very dear friend of mine and his talent and zest for life are humbling to me.
Great artwork. I can’t imagine the time it must take to create each letter.
