We Have A Prize, We Just Don’t Have A Contest… Contest.

The Grand prize for the Contest contest?

The other day I got a wonderful email from fellow Woody Boater Gedd Schweikert who said he had this very cool DUMAS triple model. And he was looking to find a fitting person to give it too. GIVE, not sell. And well, we had some fun back and forth talking about it, and decided we would offer it up for an award to a contest. Hey it’s winter. And everyone loves a distraction. So I thought on it, and on it, and on it. Then YIP YAP HAPPENED and then so in true A.D.D fashion, I got all swirled up in other butterfly dreams.

Ready to build over $400 value.

SO? Here we are, I have a very cool Prize, and yet no contest. SO, here is the idea. We need a Contest and whoever comes up with the best Contest idea, wins the prize. It’s kinda a fitting contest idea for Woody Boater, and since its a model , well, seems to makes sense to do the contest in parts.

The prize is ready to be shipped

Actually the more I write about it, kinda free thinking as I am writing, its a great idea. And if your contest idea is great and it will be, we can make it a regular event with Prizes given to the cause. Trust me, I have enough Prizes to keep this going for years. We all do.

Three screens, and my buddy! The cushion is like a wall of protection.

So! Have at it. I am stuck in front of three screens today at work, so I need a distraction! WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER TOMORROW!

I am thinking a contest where the winner is Whomever has posted the most “soft core porn” in the comment section.

Oh wait I don’t really want a model boat, because I will never put it together. Skip that last comment.

Let’s find the Woody Boater who’s done the most to help another Woody Boater during COVID and give it to him/her. Think of all the Woody Boaters out there who’ve lost their job, lists loved one or seen their business falter due to this terrible pandemic. Let’s find an unsung hero that helped one of those boaters in ways big and small. We know the stories are out there. And they’ll warm our hearts during this long, cold winter.

How about a father and son contest or a grandfather and grandchild contest? Written commitments from both the candidates to build it together and provide updates and photos of their progress along the way till completed. This could be a story that lasts for generations.

    One thing I thought of
Who has helped Matt the most with ideas to help slow down the sausage days or another is who is the best antique boat ambassador

Then this got me to thinking who has been showing boats at shows the longest then I got to thinking my first show that we participated in was at Clayton back in 69. This got me to thinking more and with all the different shows I have gone to in different locations and including the Dippy regattas and the Great International Steam Boat Flotillas I have been to it is about 165 and it just dawned on me that I have not even added in all the antique outboard meets that I have been to. Wow time flies when your having a fun time. This is such a great hobby to be involved with

Maybe a model boat show. Owner built from kits or scratch built. Lots of categories i.e. power,sail,display,etc..
Prizes could be swell ribbons that the winners can print out and color to the appropriate award.

There may be a bacon barge out there waiting to win best in show.

Many years ago I bought the same Dumas model kit. I later opened the box and started to think how long it would take for me to start (and FINISH) the kit….
The next year at the the ACBS Boat show in St Michaels I bought one that had been finished!. It wasnt cheap….
I figured my time would be better spent working on my real boats!
…..and I MAY not be telling the “truth” to family members who saw the initial boat kit and swore Id never do it! 🙂 Ita all about how you answer the questions..

If the prize is the model, then surely we need the winner to be an experienced model boat builder. I’d hate to see that model not get built….

Maybe we could nominate someone who we know that is deserving of the model and who we know would build it
I have a friend that would be worthy and very appreciative to get it
He keeps the local rc boat group together takes charge of getting them to come to our boat show every year to put on a nice display of their boats to make a nice addition to our show. They also run them when the waves behave for them. I have lost track of how many years he has been doing this. He has built a bunch of the Dumas kits through the years but someday wants to do a real woody

I have that same kit sitting in our basement shop. My dad bought it years ago, gave it to my nephew years ago, who gave it to me years ago. It is a very ambitious project assembled much like the way full size boats are built and the way I built the scale Torpedo Matt featured here last year. I’m not sure if my kit will ever be built and I also considered gifting or selling it. If the pandemic continues, I may build it. It would be a beautiful display piece.

You buy the boat and never tell the wife until she sees it in a shed at your work. When she asks what is that, you say that is my new woody boat! She storms off in a huff and the next year she wants a ride in it. After the ride she says that is really cool. Because all woody boats are awesome!

Interesting comments! Prior to Covid we held a model boat show at the Presque Isle Harbor Wooden Boat Show for 21 years straight. Most likely will do it again in 2022 if all gets back to normal. Some fantastic models were displayed. From kits to scratch built. One chap was finding models that had been trashed and then repurposing them. Again fantastic workmanship. Some folks would take a model like this and make just enough changes to build it to look just like their personal boat. Then they would display it on the deck of their boat at some of the shows. All great stuff. Thanks!

This my first comment on Woody Boater. I am in in the process of building all twelve of the Dumas Chris Craft Collection and about to begin number ten. A couple of them have been RC’d, but most are for display. They are finished like “real” CC boats with CC stain about 12 to 15 coats of finish. The picture is the latest Dumas 1940 CC 19′ Barrel Back completed last month. I have not built the 24′ Triple yet.
My contest would be “who has completed the most Dumas or other model kits?”
Maybe some may remember the virtual show in Clayton last summer. My 1938 17′ Deluxe runabout “Queeny” won best preserved runabout.
