The Parts Room. AKA The Room Of Nuts!

, ,

Dee’s Nuts and more nuts, and some bolts, nails, Zincs..

As we go through the past couple months of my weekends and moments not on zoom calls, one room has been the most tedious. The parts room. Or more like the Room of Nuts!  My plan is to have this be a place for all my parts. But the layout was not all that great, yet, I wanted to save the texture of it all. And each bin was full of bolts, zincs, pipes.. AHHHHHHHHH!

The Room of nuts – red arrow.

Lets go in there. BTW, even George isnt a fan of this room. Leaks, has vines inside.. Epoxy spill on the floor. I LOVE IT!

BTW, this is cleaned up. Old shelves, which are very cool, BUT about to fall apart. The light bulb lighting is classic.. But for my old man eyesite needed to be changed first. HELLO TEMP LED..

I had to move two of the nut racks.. Insert joke here.. Full of stuff, see on the floor. All NOS, but need to be weeded through and put in proper rack.. BTW, Those racks are heavy and wobbly.

The work bench on the left was full of stuff. Didnt even know it was there. And very cool NOS hardware

Love this top! I know of a certain chair in Mt Dora that will be perfect here

The other view, thats the Library and a small office. Which I am thinking could be a nice bathroom with shower so I can return home

The shelving is from an old general store next door that’s been there forever. Now a snazzy restaurant. And this room got put on hold to get the office done first. This room will also hold Chris Craft parts, and more hardware. The Library which will be later will house books, brochures and history of the Railway and classic boats. Below is Work in progress on the office. New Insulation.

Not a one man job, but I have Bruiser there yelping me!

The plan is to install 2 inch insulation as seen here, then layer Cedar planks on the ceiling. So it stays true to its feel. You will not see this. But you sure will feel it. I also installed a light to aim up and light the area. The lights hanging will be replaced with vintage Benjamin Industrial lights. Stay tuned on that. VERY VERY COOL!

3 of the 6 new old restored lights. These are original porcelain lights.

STAY TUNED! They arrive today.

That parts room reminds me of the attic in my Grandpa’s garage when I was a kid. I was afraid to go up there thinking something spooky had to live there! Great memories.

If those nut racks could talk. Insert your own jokes here…

I have one of those porcelain light fixtures above a workbench in my shop. With the right bulb, the lighting can be very useful.

Often in old school lighting, silver bowl bulbs were used to minimized the glare of a bare bulb and use reflected light from the fixture shell to disperse an easier on the eyes light. I see these are available in LED too.

Will the room of nuts serve as the maintenance office for the Bunker Apartments?

Also, when can I put a deposit down to reserve my unit? I would like a water view towards the head end please.

BTW, in case you were wondering what the triangle shaped gasket hanging from a nail was used for. I believe it is a gasket for a Hedman header exhaust manifold. Not a boat part but a car part. I recently installed new ones on my 57 Chev. 383. The gasket is used between the manifold and the exhaust pipe.

When I cleaned out my dads garage after he passed I inherited countless bins of old screws, nuts etc including some that he got from his dad. My wife could not understand why I would keep them [wheel bearings from a 1941 Plymouth?] but this supply has come in very handy over the years.

Over the years I have kept adding to the collection (especially with old boat parts) so someday my kids are going to have to deal with it. I may be either thanked or cursed for it.

Love the nut room! 😮 I’ll be curious to see how “ugly” it stays. Somehow seems appropriate for the nut room to be gross and hanging out everywhere.

My grandfather’s Texaco station had a room like that in the back, lots of parts. After 4PM it had a few six packs sitting there as this is where the locals would drop by to shoot the bull and wet their whistle. There was always a calendar on the wall. You didn’t find one in your’s?

      Floyd,

I love bomber art, but if the Boatress is anything like mine those blasts from the past have very little chance of making it on the walls. I call it “american folk art” my wife calls it “sexist.”

All I can say is: Wow! Reedville is so lucky it has a “fortunate son” in you, Matt, with the vision and ability to turn your passions into reality on so many levels. Of course I’m a bit envious, (as I suspect many of us are) because this is a perfect dream project – preserving something unique and historic, keeping it functional while putting one’s own stamp on it. The best possible outcome for the founders, community and everyone involved! 🤗

I am loving your huge project also Matt, Its all cool, I may have missed this but how long had the business been closed and did they not have any insulation in the building ? It would be tough to work there in the winter.

George stopped working there about 2 years ago. but folks, like me used the railway. A good place for guys to have there boats on the lift for sure. Never any insulation or heat, or AC. One source of water, one toilet. I will leave the large building alone, but the small office is getting the deluxe treatment and a mini split.

        Art,
Ductless HVAC. The air handler mounts on the inside wall, the refrigerant compressor is outside, usually on a pad. Refrigerant lines run from the compressor to the air handler. It can extract either heat or cold from the refrigerants to heat or cool the inside space.

Modern units can produce heat when outside temps are below zero.

    Matt,

I am at the stage in life where I am cleaning things out not collecting. When your library is ready, I would be happy to donate my complete collection of Classic Boating magazines minus three all in binders. Just let me know.
