Boats! Yes, Actual Boats, In The Water, Trailers.

Garry Visser out on the St Johns River Cruise. Breath it in. Thats water and exhaust! mmmmmmmm yummmy

Well, here we go. Over a year of living in an alternative universe. Is boating okay? Are shows okay? Is hugging another person okay? Shaking hands? Photos of old tools, puppies, anything to keep it all going. And today we see a light at the end of the tunnel. BOATS! Why we are all here, there, and in there, on there, over there. BOATS.

WECATCHEM out of the gloom and headed to get her new engine

maybe I just keep going to fla

At Tidewell Marine with Dave Matthews, the best on the Northern Neck. Thats Jimmys 1961 Ski boat on the right thats been dialed in. OH JUST WAIT ON THAT ONE, HOLY CRAP!

It’s a bit of a hodge podge, but so what. It’s a glimmer of light, and a deep reminder of how important shows, or now show-ups are.

Boats are starting to show up on Lake Dora

The new docks are done. But not until you see the Dr.. Get it, Dock, Doc? its a pandemic joke. Too soon? Okay I will slither away and back to boats

Damn! I shoulda shown up, but I can’t even get the boats out of storage for another 4-5 weeks. I think I need to get a winter boat. Do you think the Harrison’s will let me keep it at their place 51 weeks a year?

There are 4 (possibly 5) guys with 4 (possibly 5) boats staying in our rental on Lake Dora. I think it’s a relief valve for them, just to get out and enjoy life, do something they are used to doing and do it without worry. Tight quarters over there for sure but we will house the boats and the trailers and the people somehow.

As is fairly well known, it’s been almost business as usual in this bulwark called Florida, a bit of a beacon in the broader slough of despond that’s enveloped everywhere else. Not totally normal of course but somewhat and improving every day. The lakes have been busy all winter with people doing what they usually do here in the winter months. We didn’t really experience the ubiquitous, oppressive and depressing miasma that was in such evidence most everywhere else.

It’s almost hard for us who have been here for a while to relate to the feeling of emancipation others may experience as they emerge from other jurisdictions and engage, but it’s a relief to see. It almost seems that some aspects of normal life didn’t stop in FL.; our vacay rental has been booked solid for months and months and months, since last summer. Many of the renters came from within Florida, but increasingly now, they are coming from other places.

It’s a shame the show had to be cancelled but there was no realistic alternative, and it is great to see folks from afar arriving anyway and getting their lives back, and getting out on the lakes. Welcome to Dora!

Of note: the header picture and lead picture is Wayne Johnson’s Continental from Okoboji Lake Iowa, we launched and the fog was just starting to burn off so I forced he and my brother Royce Humphreys to idle out and back. Some of the shots look like they’re about to go over the edge of an “infinity pool”, was so cool to hear the big flathead six burble into the fog. Later that day we were running steady when the prop and shaft broke off and we were towed about two miles by some terrific fishermen. “It’s not a boat show until someone gets towed!” never more true.

Ahh, Harrison! Good to hear your synopsis. I know you’ve got your finger on the pulse of what’s happening. Wondered how or if the Canadians would find a way to escape.
