Let’s Go Back In Time – Stuffing Box

, ,

The shaft sleeve cut, And all ground to match the piece we made.

Did you all change your clocks? I know its a lot to expect, and might be the only thing not politicised these days. Well, here, we decided to step back and interrupt the  Barn Find Milking of stories and talk about Sweet Pea’s Stuffing box. DONE..Ish.. As you may recall before we so rudely interrupted by baby Chick. We were completing the Stuffing box and bottom repairs on Sweet Pea.

Wax paper to prevent 5200 from getting on the shaft

Nice!

Holes drilled through the hull.. AHHHHHHHH! 4 of them for the bolts

And bam, the new box.

Lots of grinding, sanding and fitting BTW. Everything had to line up

And back in the water. We are letting her sit for a bit so everything finds its place. Then attaching the shaft to the engine. The good news is she has a new stuffing box, and cutless bearings, and we know the Keel needs to be tightened up in the spring.

She can sit there a bit. She is about 1/4 inch off.

STAY TUNED for more Baby Chick updates.

She is in da house!

Will Baby Chick become the WB ship of state? Talk about click-bait! Weekly progress postings, etc. Fridays could be Chick Day.

If you are considering changing her name I think “Chick Bait” would be a contender.

      Nice stuffing box job.

Leave Baby Chick “As Is” for a year and show it at Reedville, St. Michaels and of course Smith lake boat shows. People LOVE barn finds!!

I have no comment on the phrases “stuffing Box and shafts”. I’m going to leave all that to everyone elses perverted minds.

I think such a stuffing box issue would have made another boat owner (without a own slipway) quite nervous for the slipway day rate. How many days in total was Sweet Pea on the railway ?
You saved some money out which can be used for your newest chick 😎

Kinda sad that all this work to fit this important part in the boat won’t be seen. Not like some fancy bright work up on deck. You and all of us know it’s there and of course the boat will stay floating.

So how is it that this gets classified as “Chick Bait”?

      Maybe “Click Bait”!

This new world is so confussing sometimes.

May I suggest that you remove your ring when doing this? Good way to lose a finger! We preached it all the time to our mechanics in the Air Force.
