State Of The Union: Header Days, App’s Email, and Other Glitches

,

It worked great..until it didnt. So many updates it just became impossible to keep going for free

Once sure sign that Woody Boater is getting old, is all the little things that just don’t work like they used too. I am still in design mode for a new Woody Boater, except for the simple insight that WoodyBoater’s DO NOT LIKE CHANGE. But the design of the site is so old, things break and the foundation of it all is so out of date, its hard to update things. Like the dam emailer. So it seems to break weekly. Header days dont rotate the way they did. UGH. Forget the App, that was a $20K YES $20,000 failure. And needed a massive update again as Apps do.

One of the first headers

Header from 2010

The site alone, the lifeblood of Woodyboater is so massive it uses its own Server and that is not cheap. Roughly $8,000 a year just to host the site. YA YA, don’t bother telling me about all the cheaper solutions, even owning a server. I get it, but the plan we have now has been 100% reliable and works great. So? Now what?

Oh Ya

We are passionate about keeping WoodyBoater FREE! Open, and as silly and stupid as it is, you do get what your don’t pay for. HA, And I love it that way.  I have enough stuff people pay for, and to be honest, it’s a burden when you are working for money. OH, don’t get me wrong. I love that. But there, this is passion driven and our Sponsors support your and my freedom to express our joy.

Kirby Paint Co is the best!

Thats why all our Sponsors have renewed there commitment this year, and since inflation does not effect anyone here, we have kept all rates the same for the past 3 years. And those were reduced based on COVID issues to help all.

Your brand Here!

If you are interested in becoming a Sponsor, bring it on. This is the best time in our 15 year history for you and all of us. And here is the crazy part. As a marketing professional for over 40 years. Woody Boater is Hands down without question the best marketing platform in the entire category of classic boats. There is more about this in our ABOUT Section. Stats and so on.

Our Mayor

So? What is the state of our union? Its very strong, and there are some new and cool things ahead. We will never stop trying and pushing the envelope to improve the classic boat community.

We all have some sort of Shrine

Thank you and may god, gods, extraordinary beings, aliens, and your cult leader bless you. Ya, I went there.

The donate link gives me this:

“Something’s not right. This page doesn’t exist.”

I am guessing the something that’s not right is your spelling! 😀

Is anyone else surprised that the folders at the top of Troy’s browser aren’t “naked girls” “nearly naked girls” “half naked girls” “girls with food products” and “girls with animals”?

I hired a guy from Lucas Electric to do all my wiring. All fixed now. Not like Mr B fixed. More like repaired. Hurry though, the duct tape and drywall screws are doing well for now

Never understood the need for the app.

Despise updates! Android/Verizon pushed one out over the weekend. Now I have to relearn/readjust something every time I start to use some feature of my phone!

The advantage to the app that I liked was to be able to find out what other WoodyBoaters were around you and how you might contact them. We don’t have a means for that and there are times that I would like to PM some of my virtual friends.

donate page worked fine for me? Paypalled a C note and precious little for the entertainment and devotion.
My vote is hate change but willing.
I have made a big lifestyle change, trying to anyway. I am, at age 74, morphing from a Curmudgeon into a SAGE! High fricken time you all say!!

Before deciding to donate or not, could you please answer the following related to Woody Boater:
    1. for tax purposes, have you or intend to write-off any woody boater vehicles? write-off as through depreciation or expense (section 179 item). this would include trucks, boats (Wecatchem, Stinky), etc.
    2. for tax purposes, do you expense any travel/transport expenses related such as dropping Wecatchem off at Katz’z?
    3. for tax purposes, do you expense any operating expenses (gas, oil, small repairs) related to your boats or vehicles owned?
    4. for tax purposes, do you expense any items you’ve purchased such as vintage life preservers, vintage signs, vintage oil cans, etc?
Trying to decide if any donation is going to a business, a charity or a hobby – thanks!

Also keep in mind that Woody Boater LLC is NOT a 501c3.

If my memory serves me correctly Matt wanted to keep it fun and not have to follow the guidelines of “educational” (though it is in some way every day) so it would be advisable NOT to try to write off your donation.

Great question Warren. NO! WoodyBoater according to the tax records is a loss. A huge loss, and not the kind that is a wink and a knod. The boats, are mine, the railway is mine. As to expenses for WoodyBoater which I have been doing go to Web Hosting $8K a year alone, travel to shows and events to report on, per mile and so on. The truck No way. not even possible according to IRS rules. Milage to WB events YES, to Katzs No. I manage my affairs in a very conservative way and have good people helping me. on average it costs roughly 30K a year to do this. BTW, my time is free. And trust me, when I do, Well lets just say, I am fine. I will add, I have not raised a donate issue for years. Sponsors are at a reduced rate since COVID and have not raised rates in 7 years. Bad Business. Yes, Good feelings YES . Further even more. Ask the boatress how Woody Boater is? Why we keep feeding it with money to do things. And yet keep it free. Oh! Tshirt and cup sales. we break even. And over the past two years, are in the hole. Deep, because Florida is usually the large clearing house. So its a real loss. Like by a boat with that money loss. But its my personal contribution to a community I care about. Some write checks, I do this. To me, its all priceless. And for the record. I hate even bringing it up. But I got yelled at enough this year, that I couldnt defend doing this for free anymore.

    Matt,
We are in the same boat with Howe Marine.
I keep my real job so that I can shove any monies I have left down into the Black Hole of Calcutta. And I mean a very DEEP hole……
When we took over, there was enough deferred maintenance to choke a VERY large mule.
Promise me when we see you and Suzy at the show in FL, we do NOT allow them to talk shop!
If they compare notes on Railways and Marinas, we are DOOMED. Our peeps will find us side-by-side on the shoulder of the road with our collective throats cut and the wives on their way to a nice dinner in Mt. Dora with copious amounts of good wine.
In our minds, our behavior makes total sense and a boat hoarder is an ideal we try to live up to.
In the minds of our wives, we test that “for better or worse” clause on a daily basis.
Then again at this age, don’t all wives keep husbands around just for our witty color commentary? 🙂
