This Special Request Goes Out TO Phil, What I Listen To At HQ.

We got a request the other day from Phil in New Zealand asking what music we, as in Mr B and I listen to while enjoying the timelessness of it all. Well, Phil from New Zealand, todays story is dedicated to you. WARNING: The music list is very eclectic.

Mozart, Alan Jackson, J.D Souther, Gordon Lightfoot, Josh Groban, Aerosmith, The Mavericks, Santana, Warren Zevon, Grace VanderWaal, Penguin Cafe, Beethoven, Philip Glass, Miles Davis, Phil Collins, Weepies, Any Bluegrass, Dixie Chicks, Mindy Smith, Opra, yup, love me some romantic Opra, no else does, but I can crank that ship up. Alison Krauss, The entire field of Spaghetti Western Music specifically Ennio Morricone, Which he also wrote the Mission Soundtrack with Yo Yo ma

Steve Earl, Dire Straights, And of course  Mark and David Knophler. AC DC, Metallica, then some Bach, Vivaldi, and George Straight. Celtec Music in general, Eva Cassidy,  Django Reinhardt makes me smile,

Of Course Lyle Lovett

Like this one from Knopler which is about a Trawler. Yup. Its great out on Sweet Pea, no one hears the lyrics, but they are dead on.

The list goes on and on, it changes daily, because I love it all, okay most of it all, no angry music, I hate fake country music, singers that try and show off with all sorts of notes to add to the crap they are spewing. I listen to Pandora on a Sonos System of about 10 speakers that can blast, or sooth throughout the railway.

Regular radio is deader than rotten fish, with all the dumb local  advertising which is like Nails on a chalkboard for me. Well, that started getting a little into the weeds. OH WAIT, My number one favorite. Slim Whitman. Not kidding. This guy can wake up even the most docile board teenager. OH! I know from experience.

Right now on Pandora I have a Woody Boater Radio station, I will look more into it, so we can all add to it and in a fun way here each others favorite music. I am not clear yet how to do that, but I am sure its possible STAY TUNED.. No Really, thats not a pun, wait, yes it is, no its not, yes it is.. HERE IS A LINK TO WOODYBOATER RADIO, try it out if you are on pandora and lets see if this works. It would be so cool to all be listening to each others music.

Working on the boat: Classic late sixties and 70’s rock and roll – Loud and played on an old-time receiver with big a– speakers.

Mellow Time: Sufjan Stevens, Dina Krall, Paper Kites

Want to get people moving: Big Band – especially “In The Mood” by Glenn Miller

Hard to fathom Jimmy Buffet not making your playlist! I sometimes tease my Crew Chief about his eclectic taste in music running “from Alpert, Herb & the Tijuana Brass to Zappa, Frank & the Mothers of Invention”. Those being the bookends of his approximately 5′ long vinyl collection.

Django Reinhardt is truly amazing. He only had use of two fingers on his left hand, the result of severe burns from a fire. He manages to make those fast lead runs and string bends that sound like a guitarist who uses all four fingers. While he could use the damaged fingers for some chords like 9ths, the majority of his sound is from using only two fingers.

Some good stuff in that list…but not sure how you missed the punk, new wave and K Pop genres….music that has and still is rocking the world…

Here is a nautical one from Split Enz out of Australia…”Six Months in a Leaky Boat”….we have all been there!

I agree with Kelly. It is had to believe that you have no Jimmy Buffett. Or even Kenny Chesney on your playlist. Great boating music. I love the dial on the Philco radio. My grandpa was a Philco dealer/ repair shop in the 30s and 40s.There were a lot of Philco radios around our house growing up. The huge 1941 floor model that grandpa kept for the family, now belongs to my daughter. Still works and still in the family.

I have a friend who once told me that in laying the last coat of varnish after washing down his varnish room he strips to undershorts, lights a joint and plays classical museum, helping the flow… I didn’t ask about body hair or ash!

If you want to extend any evening cruise, simply put on Van Morrison’s Have I told you Lately I Love You. Just be certain you’ve got enough fuel aboard as nothing goes better with wine, sunset, inboard exhaust burbbles and Van.

OK, Mark Knopfler is my all time favorite. No question. Thanks for sharing the song. By the way, the lovely lady beside him in one of the shots is not his wife. It is Emmylou Harris. The two of them do an incredible album called “All the Roadrunning”.

I got to this late but am relieved that someone finally mentioned Leon Redbone. Thanks Bill. But what about Dr. John, Gordon Lightfoot, and Little River Band?

The hardest thing I’ve found is to appreciated someone else’s playlist. I’m sure you’d be miffed at mine: La Luz, Stick Figure, Allah Las, Froth, Beach House, Lord Huron, Insanitizers, all new age surf rock and plus old surf rock (Dick Dale, Link Wray, the Ventures, the Surfaris) plus Dwight Yoakum and any Bakersfield sound plus Tajano (Tex/Mex). One of my faves though is the YouTube video of James Brown and Pavarotti doing with full orchestra live version of “It’s A Man’s World”. You’ve got to crank up the volume.
