First and Last Cobras together. History in the making

A huge thanks to fellow Woody Boater and world class photographer Steve Lapkin for reporting in from Coeur d’Alene Idaho at the ACBS International event. History is being made while we sit here and drool. Is this the first time in history that the Prototype Cobra and the last Cobra made are together? WOW! Here is Steve’s Report. aaaaand I get to make up the captions. Woohooo.

SUPER WAVE and a regular Wave

Okay thats a Shipload of Super Waves!

My last report was from the pre-event, final day of on-the-water time at the Pre-Event for the 2021 ACBS Annual Members’ Meeting at Priest Lake, Idaho. Thence, the scene and events have shifted south to Lake Coeur d’ Alene.

Goooooood god, that is one slick Stan Craft

Prior to today, Friday, the activities continued to be ‘wet!’ A Wednesday “Poker Run’ on the Spokane River allowed the members to test their navigational skills and celebrate with hands-high thanks to those that helped make this venue a stunning success. Grateful applause goes to Priest Lake hosts, Brian and Kathy Fair and family!

Mommy has a Gambling problem.

And now, equal appreciation is extended to the host property and facilities of The Resort at Coeur d’Alene. The additional imagery provided here is from Yesterday, Thursday, as a history-making photo shoot was organized to showcase the prototype 18-foot Chris-Craft Cobra alongside the final production hull of the 21-foot Chris-Craft Cobra: both vessels are now under the custodianship of Brett Sargent of Washington State. Brett drove Proto and fellow-photographer-friend, Wes Yandt, was at the helm of Finito (the last.) As far as I know, these two stalwarts have never been side-by-side for a cameo. Indeed, they made a big splash!!

The Big Splash!

COBRAS

EEEEEYAAAAAAAAOHHHHHHH! Momma Mia! Two Famous Cobras. Done by the Cobra King, Katzs Marina

I also had the honor to be invited onboard Miss Sydney, owned by Curt and Marsha Erickson. Sitting in the cockpit alongside Curt, with camera at-the-ready, please enjoy several additional clicks of Curt at the wheel and it’s reflective dash and gauges…as well as the trailing wake at upwards of 50 miles per hour.

This, thus, concludes the on-the-water time for all: attention today turns to judging, awards and a farewell banquet on Saturday evening. The moments will be long remembered and indelible.

    Amazing photos Steve, thank you!
    Cobras united, yes, making history!
Making new friends, spending time with old ones. I’m honored to know Curt & Marsha for decades, thanks to them for my Lady Friend Liz Beth❤️. Curt’s mantra “For years I been searching for that old guy with the old boats, pieces and parts… now I am that guy!”

Another great show with beautiful pictures. Thanks Steve. I had the fortune of going to Lake Coeurd’Alene in 2019. While visiting my niece in Washington. Just before the world locked down. It is a beautiful lake. I can only imagine how cool it is for a wooden boat show.

Years ago former Northern Wisconsin boat enthusiast, character, and wood boat restorer, Willie Kruzinski told me he used to work the largest Chris Craft dealership in Chicago in the 1950’s.

He said one year they actually gave a Cobra away if you bought a big 50’+ CC Constellation because nobody wanted to buy the “ducklings.”

Very valuable but not the best looking vintage boat.

Having a great time in Coeur d’ Alene. The resort is wonderful and had a great dinner cruise last night. Going to look over the boats this morning and golf this afternoon. Stancraft boat tour was really cool as was the Bird aviation museum. Found out why the airport was named “Pappy Boyington Field “. It was because of his ties to the area. I miss not having the Torpedo here. Would have been fun chasing those Cobras.

This venue has been on my bucket list for several years. Twice I had all the plans worked out to visit and had to cancel due to health. I also would love to have my HackerCraft, “Old School” out there to chase around with those Cobras.
The only Cobra I raced, I beat, remember Matt, Pete???

Ahhhh it’s like the ole days when every morning it was another boat show. Loving this past week. Steve thank you for recording the event for all to enjoy. I imagine these pictures are just a very few of what you must’ve captured. You’ll have more work to do when you finally get home.

Idaho – No masks, 40% of the population unvaccinated, hospital at crisis capacity and rationing care. Having boat show in the middle of all of that – what could possibly go wrong? Irresponsible and reckless.

Nothing, just like in every college town, where they have 60 to 100,000 screaming, sitting next to each other for hours…
