“THE FLAG BRINGS OUT…..” By Steve Lapkin

Lets Go!

A huge shout out to Sir Steve Lapkin of the Island Of Clicks and pics for send ing us in this story of whats so special about this weekend.

This weekend is exceptionally extraordinary for the U S of A. The Memorial Day holiday weekend is revered to commemorate and honor the sacrifices of others. We do so individually and collectively through reflection, gratitude, and unity. The local community parades, barbeques, and family get-togethers are the special moments that we choose to express our gratitude to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We, as wooden boat disciples, choose being on-the-water to revel and show thankfulness. We fly our flag abidingly. These recent clicks attest.

“You ought to be in pictures.” Well, obviously, you are in pictures…as my trusty Canon attests. As the song relates: “you out to be in pictures; you’re wonderful to see; you ought to be in pictures; how beautiful you would be!” Indeed!

Our traditional (North America) boating season is just getting underway, again. Where might your trusty woodies be taking you in the next months? Your imagination is your only limitation”, said Charles Kettering. But imagination has no actual limit. Just be sure to bring the flag along (your family and best friends, too) always!

Where are you heading? Lake Lanier, Lake Wawasee, Flathead Lake, Lake George, Lake Hopatcong, Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Tahoe, Algonac, or Gull Lake? A lake lesser known? I will be looking for/at you.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time to reflect on who we are, where we have come from and the men and women that have made that possible. Some giving up their lives in the endeavor. What a sacrifice. Please, in addition, remember the families of our fallen hero’s , who have paid dearly as well. Have a wonderful Memorial Day everyone! It is an honor to be an American.

Being a veteran (USCG) today I honor all those who have served and given their lives for us. I reflect back 50 years ago and see in my mind the endless rows of crosses in the American Memorial Cemeterys (plural) in Normandy, endless rows of white crosses… I visit my folks at Sunset Hills, where our flag is placed at the headstones showing those who served.
I thank Steve for including “Beautiful Day” in today’s story.
