Now before you all go running for the book shelf to post yours.. You can find them on Amazon for just $699.00 WHAT? OK, OK, wait.. here is one on ebay, it’s only … WHAT! $1,793.00 Momma mia! what in the heck is going on here? maybe the crack smoker on Ebay for $730 is being generous? Sure, they are useful, but ya need a price guide to follow this thing now.. For the record, The Mariners Museum has them for 49 bucks.. Here.
I am not sure whats going on on Amazon, and Ebay but these are available out there between 50 bucks and 100…, heck I just loaned mine out to a pal.. Wait.. I should have taken his car out as collateral..

Sorry, The Mariners Museum is out of stock and does not know IF they will be getting any in.
If you know where I can buy one for $50 – $100 please let me know, I would love to own one but refuse to pay these prices.
I am patient after all, I do steward a cruiser.
It is out of print and distributor inventory is gone. The only way to get a copy now is to overpay for a rare new or used copy someone still has, or wait for a reprint or electronic edition.
At this point, the important questions are who owns the rights to it, and who has the master material?
Same for Danenberg’s masterpiece.

So glad you picked up this thread from the CC forum. Surely books like this one are “essential” (sorry about that) to the woodyboat lifestyle. Let’s expose the mystery behind reprinting. It can’t be that complicated. Dan Dannenburg’s book too? You have got to be kidding me. The internet is not enough. We need print and we need real people contact for preservation of our passion with these boats.
I agree, I’m tired of getting 5200 and epoxy on my keyboard and screen for referencing stuff!!!
Truthfully, I still prefer analog paper pages esp magazines although I just finished an e-book on Kindle
I got my “Essentials” for the bargain price of $36 when they first came out. Autographed by the author too! The bidding is open but it better come with a roadworthy trailer

OK, so let’s find out who/what entity owns the rights to the book and get going on a reprint or digital or whatever?
I live close to the museum and have dealt with them in the past, maybe I could investigate?
Jerry Conrad’s departure from the Museum was/is a weird/sensitive deal.
We should move on from that and concentrate on getting the book reprinted.

Copyrights on “works of art” belong to the author for 75 years past his/her demise.
However is the guide a work of art or a compilation of materials from CC?
Under what circumstances was this material given to the museum? Can it be copied?
“Fair use” allows copies to be made of “passages for educational purposes or review…not the whole book.
If one intends to reprint the book, have good attorney and a deep pocket.
I think John has the right idea….but to save him a trip, I just e-mailed Patti..She may not be there on the weekend, but let’s see what she says.
I had no idea they were worth so much…I guess I’d better include it in my will before my kids give it away after I’m gone..
Patti’s “out of office reply” says the library will reopen January 6th…So unless she gets e-mails at home, we may won’t see anything from her here before then.

Wow, I had no idea this book was worth THAT kind of $$$’s!!!! It has done much better than many stocks purchased at the same time. Makes me sorry that I only purchased (50) autographed copies back then!
(Before I get besieged with 100’s of requests — just kidding. Only have one autographed copy)

My original copy was getting fairly used up, so in December, 2011 I purchased a new copy. The first page states: Copyright 2002 by The Mariners’ Museum, All rights reserved. So it seems that a reprint of the book would be up to The Mariners’ Museum, unless they yield their copyright.
My first copy is filled with many notes correcting a few errors and omissions as I ran across them. Most of these were to do with cruisers. Jerry Conrad and his volunteers at the time were very helpful in confirming most of glitches.
Oh wait just a minute! As it turns out, I hold possibly the most valuable copy of this book in the world. It wouldn’t sell for much based on its condition and general appearance, but it contains many notes, most of which have been confirmed through extended research with the museum. This copy could easily be priceless, as collectible as the the 27′ Barrelback that’s featured in today’s feature story. Lou, I’ll trade you even.

I have been reading about the Essential Guide lack of availability issue on Boat Buzz. While browsing I came across the book available on Chapters-Indigo and placed my order. (Canada) I have ordered from this source before and when a book is not available they advise at the time of ordering. Not this time. They say it is on it’s way. Discounted as well. $45.00 including shipping and taxes. 3-5 weeks delivery. I will let you know of any changes. Jim.
