Yesterday we got this craigslist can listing from fellow Woody Boater Dean “HOBO” Sackett of a “Phil Right” Gas can that he found on Craigslist. Cool! Blurry photos but good enough to get the gist. LOVE THE GRAPHICS BTW. Anyhoo! So I googled around for more info on Phil Right.. And mmm, up on ebay, the same can appears. And this where things get interesting. Okay, not fascinating interesting. Maybe not even Egh Interesting. Okay Interesting may be a too interesting work, can we just get on with the story. GAAA! Sometimes I get so frustrated with my other personalities. THE POINT HERE.. Is one is $55 and the other is $95? mmmmmmm.. Why?
$94.95? Pricing like this tells me the seller is a tricky person.

And here lies the lesson. Okay 2 lessons. SHUT UP, no read on.. Listen self, shut up I am trying to get this story out and I keep editing my story. LOOP ALERT.. Anyway, Lessons. ONE. If you are listing stuff for sale. Stick to ONE DAM PRICE.. and TWO. If you find something you want to buy, look around. “Someone” may have it priced cheaper SOMEPLACE else. Right? Right? See I agree with me?
BTW, I am not going to link to either listing. This crap is well.. CRAP!
A gas can is one thing, but what has really gotten to me over the years is seeing the same boat listed by different brokers at different prices. Sometimes considerably different prices.
Is that price really right?

It. makes perfect sense from the sellers perspective. Selling on Craig’s List is free, and the buyer will hand you cash and carry the can away. If it sells on EBay, the seller has to pay selling fees and PayPal fees and then deal with the hassle of getting a gas can to the buyer. The extra $40 is probably barely worth it.
Brilliant, actually. The higher price supports the lower listing. The “buy it now” feature suggests a willingness to negotiate perhaps to a final price high higher than the other listing. This is predicated, of course, on the buyer being unaware of the other listing. This is a practical way to potentially maximize the outcome when you don’t know what the market will bear. May be a little frustrating to a buyer, but the seller is not obligated to make all interested parties happy…just one.
m-fine nailed it. Wider audience, but many additional costs & hassles to selling on eBay.
Marketing genius too. Just got a crap load of free advertising on the best vintage boater site in the universe.
I will wander further off track than even Matt does…and ask…in Troy’s photo….if that gal is some celeb I, that won’t watch TV being clueless of celebs, she needs to down a couple of big macs daily and get out in the sun…..
But then I am glad to see that Troy can post a pic without enhanced T and A….
