Chris-Craft Cobra Prototype Gets A Name

Jara and Alan discussing name and design. What do we call her?
The wonderful Cobra 18 Prototype got named and lettered at Katz’s marina on Lake Hopatcong. This was going to be a fun two part story, but “someone” plastered photos all over Facebook, so I guess there is no real drama to have fun with. Except that maybe I am gonna make you scroll down a bunch to find out here name and Alan Johnson lettering.

Thats perfect. Lets do that name

Okay, all hand lettered, designed. Old school at its absolute best

Gold leaf! Okay this is outta sequence, but gotta milk the drama a bit.
And.. we will be back after a message from our sponsor.
Hit is Buster.

WHAT?

Buster the Boxer, Alan The Letterer, and “Proto” The Prototype Cobra

Sized up for gold leaf, and the original drawing

detail.. detail, detail

From a different POV

Good god Alan makes this look easy, IT IS NOT

BAM

One coat of Varnish
Definitely knot what I was expecting
I think the name “Knotingwood” would have been fun. Am I staring a bunch of $h!t here?
Funny, when I saw the header I first thought “Proto”. (kind of a play on Froto Baggins if you will.)
After that I thought “Knotty”, but wasn’t sure I should stir the pot. Since others have already done so I guess I will join in.
Amazing how much difference the vanish over it makes. And yes, an accomplished sign painter makes it look so easy. I remember watching Jake Dixon letter our family’s race cars. He’d be conversing with someone while painting a stripe, only looking at what he was doing about half the time. Came to realize he was painting by feel – following a body contour with the fingers that weren’t holding the brush.
Well, Alan obviously does beautiful work. Stunning.
Proto. Proto? Really?
It’s like watching that Heinz commercial with all that anticipation and instead of thick great ketchup oozing out….
Out plops a dollop of vegimite.
I think you gave up your identity with a reference to “vegimite”.
The only thing American’s know about vegimite comes from a song from Men at Work.
At least Protoplasm since the others arose from this one.
Given that it is a prototype for the Cobra, I might have suggested a combination of prototype and snakebite….ProtoBite
What’s up with the “blond” areas being ORANGE here?
I would imagine its the light in the shop and or in the photo.
