Exuse Me Sir, Could You Spare A Can Of Vermillion Stain?

Does anyone know anything about Vermillion stains? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

We briefly interrupt On Golden Pond Sneak Peek Week, to help out a fellow Woody Boater. OK we are helping Peter Mellon from Antique Boat America help out a guy who still has a rotary phone.  just an observation here… EVEN THE AMISH ARE ON THE WEB! OK.. Thats my rant for the day… Here is Peters note to us.

“Matt, A client of mine is looking for a specific type of stain that was used by Chris Craft and the late 50’s. “Vermillion Stain and / Light Vermillion” was used apparently on Chris Craft Continentals and Capri’s that were built in 1958 and 1959. It may have also been used on Cavaliers and certain Utilities.

He is now looking for perhaps an old can that you could be used to match up or perhaps one of your many followers would have already been down this road and had it reproduced.

In either case any help from you and your loyal following could quite possibly solve this issue and  would be terrific. I assume if we can find a convertible top in Clayton that we can find a stain !”

    We are in the process of having this made   I’m waiting on two cans  original cans…  one with stain and one with dry stain…    Sandusky wants to make it… And so does Dave Jerome in Oregon…    Found out that there were at least   three  different Vermillion Chris Craft stain…  One said light red Vermillion Chris Craft . 
    Here is a link to a photo of the can of Vermillion can this can was bought back when a 59 Continental was new… The man bought 4 cans from Chris Craft….     7-503  vermilion  
    12 – 503 light vermilion
    7 – 520  vermilion  
    I also have the can of 7-520 coming…
    Sandusky’s stain is a filler stain.
    Dave Jerome’s stain will be a gel stain..  (very color fast)

    Might be able to pick up an unopened can at the upcoming Mikkelson Collection Auction?  Seems everything else is there.

    It was used on 1957-59 Chris Craft, Capri and Continental 21’s. As well as a number of cruisers interiors from the late 50s and some caviler plywood boats from the 50s..

    I just sent a can of light vermillion to a fellow restorer
    in the midwest. He is going to get Sandusky to
    vintage marine

       That is Chuck Symmes,    I am working with him…   We are going to do some work for Chuck,  on one of his boats.  He is semi-retired from boat work but is doing a bunch of the leg work needed to get the project done…    Also  I am refinishing  my 1959 Continental 21′ this summer… Both are Vermilion boats…

      Tommy- did you ever get ahold of this stuff? I am restoring a 58′ Cavalier Utility that came from the factory in Mahogany #7-520 vermillion stain. I am doing a lot of work to it and would like to stain the boat in how it came. Anyone else found any of this?

    Does anyone have Binimi Blue or Dawn Gray stain … I think they were made by Boydel…   Used on the Century Arabian 1955-56.    We have some blue stain that dad got from Century  but not Boydel.. and not called Binimi Blue…   (We think century messed around a little with these boats.. Original boats seem to have had a few shades of blue…  The last known boat that century did in blue was 1966, a Coronado…

    Disclaimer: I am in no way trying to make anyone angry.

    With that said, would it really be a good idea to use a 50 year old can of stain, just because it was the same stuff used when the boat was original? What of chemical breakdown and the like?

    And the new remade stuff – Is it made without the harsh chemicals or with the nasties as when it was originally manufactured? Homes used to be painted with lead based paint which we now know to be toxic, and thus, new paint is formulated differently.

    And how much is that new can of stain? Just a week ago folks were chatting about the high costs of a wood boat and trying to get the younger set to join the group. A young person is not going to give a rat’s backside if the renewed finish is vermillion or Uncle Bob’s Camel Butt – it should just look beautiful.

    I just really do not get it I guess. I have been told that original Chris Crafts left the factory with just three (3) coats of varnish and now we have boats being done with fifteen (15) coats.

    And here we have dudes spazin over fifty year old cans of original varnish to hopefully get perfection.

    I guess what I am saying is that I don’t understand why folks should go to such expense and trouble when the rest of the boat is not exactly like it was when it left the factory. 5200 bottoms. New rebuilt engine tolerances are a world apart from those in 1950. Gasket materials are different and better – the list is endless.

    Please enlighten me.

      Im with you Brian…old crappy varnish…original zippers!!?? where does it end?

      Theres no way I would use that old varnish on a new expensive restoration….now if Sandusky replicates the color with the added modern protection im all for it.

     We’re trying to preserve these boats so your kids can someday appreciate what they looked like when new. The details are very important and I applaud anyone who takes the extra effort necessary to attend to these details. If its not your thing, than that’s ok. There will always be plenty of boats out there that aren’t “correct” so I think we should enjoy and appreciate the boats that are.
