Going Down The Gar Wood Rabbit Hole, No Really.
It’s a good thing I am not into one brand of boats, I love them all, and for me, I guess, I connect with Chris Craft mostly I suppose because of the marketing, and lifestyle they embodied. But if I was deep in the woods with Gar Wood I would be lost in a rabbit hole of stuff to collect. Like serious deep, and then of course there is also the Higgins Rabbit hole. That guy was like Sears. That name is on everything as well. But today, for the sake of my sanity, which of course there is not much left of it since Covid has stolen my holiday break and desire to do anything other than watch endless obscure crap on Netflix, Amazon. I swear there is a Russian version of Rambo. FLINT. Okay, okay, AND I have lost all taste, so I cannot even enjoy a snack.
It goes on and on and on. Gar Wood was an amazing human being, and had the means to execute his visions, all before computers and other stuff. he was one of the true giants of industry and innovation. I do recall a story from Rabbit yes! Rabbit is part of the Rabbit hole story. Cant make this up! That he used to have an office in Gar Woods building. I think that was the story. Like I said. It goes on and on. Like my Covid! And because its Rabbit Hole time here is even more.
The story we did on A Gar Wood Bus. HERE
And of course if you want to have a new Gar Wood Boat, that’s also possible. CLICK RIGHT HERE.
I knew about the hydraulic dump mechanism but not all the other stuff. Pretty interesting.
He also flew airplanes and liked to go very fast in boats with teddy bears!
Forgot the pic.
That’s pretty cool, I knew he was into a lot of things, but the air conditioner units are a surprise!
I know I have pictures somewhere of a Gar Wood lift and I think it was installed on a model A truck frame so you could incorporate multiple passions in one item. Unfortunately I can’t find the pics.
Looks like Gar Wood was into a lot of different things. You must have talked to him at the Christmas party. I didn’t get to wish you get well yesterday I was on the road. but get well soon.
I’m coming late to this Gar Wood story, but yes my ad agency had an office in a building Gar owned in Minneapolis. It was confirmed by one of his nephews (Todd Warner connected us.) The nephew was in his 90’s and that was a decade ago. He also said one of the Miss America’s was stored there for a few years but couldn’t remember which one. And if it was stored there, the only place would’ve been right where my desk was. The building is now home to one of Minneapolis’ best restaurants (and hotels) Restaurant Alma.
But my Gar Wood story doesn’t end there. In college I spent three fragrant summers hanging off the back of a Gar Wood garbage truck.
My boat, Rabbit, is a 1947 Gar Wood Ensign. I proudly say it is the smallest, least expensive Gar Wood ever made. But not bad for a former garbage man.
Fun insight. Thanks for sharing !
