If Your Old Friend Could Tell Their Story – A Poem By Allen Mackin

Allen at the wheelMeet the future, Allen Mackin, Allen is not only a huge classic boat fan, but also the Service manager at Katz’s Marina on Lake Hopatcong, NJ. Allen is a wonderful guy who deeply cares about his craft,  and who knew? A Poet, a wonderful poet. Then again, taking care of classic boats is a form of artistry, and watching them run is poetry in motion. Thanks Allen for a cold Saturday filled with the warmth of words.

If Your Old Friend Could Tell Their Story.

who was there when they received their first coats of varnish,

someone who cared.

who was watching when they were delivered on their cradle,

someone who cared.

who was listening when they fired up for the first time,

someone who cared.

who gave them their first boat house,

someone who cared.

who had endless summers with them year after year,

someone who cared.

who went to check on them when the weather got bad,

someone who cared.

who tended to them when little johnny hit the dock,

someone who cared.

who came to the rescue when their coil went,

someone who cared.

who was there when they received a 5200 bottom,

someone who cared.

who labored when they were refastened and refinished,

someone who cared.

who took pride in rebuilding their engine,

someone who cared.

who was there when they won their first show,

someone who cared.

who will continue to love them unconditionally,

You.

Nice words Allen! Its reassuring to know there are some young folk interested in a hobby and lifestyle comprised mostly of old guys with older boats.

I would agree without reservation. Allen is a fine young man.
I had the good fortune of meeting Allen back in June when I flew over from NZ to see the Blue Arabian for the first time. I was immediately taken by the respect he afforded me and the skill he displayed in handling the wonderful treasures at Katz Marina. I believe at the time I wrote that he had the kind of X-factor and high service ethic we look for in my Advertising Agency. Thanks for promoting Allen today Matt. We can all learn something from him.
