Okay! Who Blowed Up Gibbs Boat? Whose Boat Was used.
If you are an NCIS watcher, and many are, not me, you know that Gibbs, the main character works on an old wood boat in his basement. And in this seasons finally he goes out for the maiden voyage…. And well. things don’t go as expected. Did he lift and sniff? Or was it something far more diabolical? And how did he survive? And dang.

V8? 1939? Feels like a Tahoe boat? Not shot on Lake Tahoe though? Where? Lake Arrowhead?

A classic scene.

Oh!

OUCH!

OH SHIP!
Well? Who got there boat all Blowed up real good? And yes, I am sure its CGI and a model. But does remind me of some of my favorite SCTV stuff. I miss that show.
You can watch the entire episode here at the official NCIS Web Site. And a huge thanks to long time NCIS viewer Bob Kays and Wayne Cory for the story as well as Waynes stone wall.
Damnit, and he worked on that thing a long time, WTF!
Did they show how he got it out the basement??
No they never do when he builds boats
Don’t ever watch the show and after this I won’t! That must have been staged or photoshopped. No one would really do that to that beautiful boat.
Hollywood, where the magical happens and reality isn’t in the plot line.
When I saw that the other day, the first thing I noticed were the dual exhausts. I assume whoever restored it put in modern V8 power?
Then I should add the red bottom. I think all were copper bronze?
Haven’t watched the show for years. When I did Gibbs was always making sail boats, so I found it curious that this story has him in a barrel back.
After doing a little CSI (or NCSI in this case) investigating I discovered that Gibbs was building a Glenn L barrel back.
So did Gibbs put Chris-Craft step pads on a Glenn L?
Very interesting. They showed him face down in the water right after the explosion all in one piece but then he swims away. I first thought that it was the end of him and or the series but apparently not.
I hope it was just a model.
Having replaced more than one of those solid coverboards I can tell you that is not a Clenn L. Ps add wrong hatch handles to red bottom paint list
Boat in the basement is Glen L can tell by the framework. The boat on the water may be an actual cc barrel , but need more info and pictures.
What kind of message is this to the rest of the world ?
Wooden boats blow up after restored ?
I can already see people running away when I get to the ramp to launch.
Let them run away….
Look at that in a positive light….you will have the ramp to yourself so ya won’t have to deal with the usual hoard of idiots.
I will never understand how a strip of concrete leading into a body of water makes most go braindead. It aint that hard.
The Glen-L site has a page on their collaboration with NCIS on both the sailboat and the Barrelback here: https://www.glen-l.com/glen-l-design-featured-on-ncis/ (I’m building the 1955 Mist Miss design). Since it’s from scratch, builders will use components from anywhere, so I wouldn’t read too much into the CC step pads.
Woody Boater detectives. I think this is really neat when this kind of stuff happens
Gibbs was building a 6 cyl Gray for the boat. The one that blew up was a V8.
I know of a 6 cyl flat head MCL with factory dual exhaust.
Blew my mind!
I agree with Mark…the knowledge in this community is amazing and fun to hear…
Scarred forever now. Never watched the show, but heard about it.
Yes.
they were building a Glenn-L barrelback. But due to all the crap that has gone on in the last year. They fell behind on the schedule of building it.
Thats why the final boat you see is a real 39 19′ Chris Craft Barrelback. They had to have a finished boat for the end of the season.
From what I saw of the boat. I don’t think it was a restored one. Just a nice on thats been maintained all its life.
This is stale news, well covered by up to date sites. The fact that cool dude Gibbs was hand making a wooden boat on a most highly rated TV series has done more for the hobby than a cult blog with sex tease that can’t tell the diff from a Glen-L vs a CC. Me think Gibbs should be put in the ACBS Hall of Fame.
Kool aide anyone?

According to my friend Gayle, Glen L ‘s daughter, they were building a Glen L Barrel Back. Many builders emulate the CC cover boards.
