Open Up A Can Of Whoop Ass With Art’s Seam Cleaning Tool.

,

YA! Becareful, this tool will tell you how it feels about the job your doing

Today we have a gift from the god’s of Chris Crafts past thanks to Art, yes our art, not the other art with is just there to look at. Where as our Art actually does something, and well. Okay, nice to look at. Anyway Art shared with me his special tool yesterday. No not that tool, but a very cool old tool that was made by an old time Chris Craft worker to clean out seams.

Oh hell ya!

I know there are all sorts of ways, but I love this one. And it also has other purposes. Like, it has some attitude, and when the jobs all done, open up a bottle of wine. Although wine may be a tad fancy after cleaning out the seams on your boat. But hey, just open your can , not that can, but a can of beer.

We hammered the end of a bastard file, you know, the tang. No not that Tang. The tail end of a flat file can be hammered into a hook to reef out seams. You make the hook in the same plane as the file so when you lay it down flat, it doesn’t stick up or down, it hooks right or left. That way you grab the file in your hand comfortably and pull the hook end down the seam. You can file the hook for width and for improving its capability of digging out the seam.

Yes it comes with detailed instructions….put tab A into slot B and PULL towards you, NO pushing aloud!

Use of the optional screw device C is as follows —- Insert screw device C into the cork B at the top of the corked bottle W and rotate device clockwise, with your right hand, until the screws of C are all the way seated into the cork B.
    1) Firmly grab device and pull until the cork B is clear of the neck of the bottle W. Pour contents of the bottle W into a tall stemmed glass vessel WG and consume said content.
    2) If this optional process C is defeating you, call your wife or significant other as they will know what to do.

I made one out of a tack puller. Like a screw driver with a fork on the end to pull tacks. Just grind off one tang and grind to width of seam and pull the old material out of the seam. I used a heat gun and pulled caulking with my engineered invention.

Not being a a “Woody Boater” I do not know the seam width for these mahogany deck seams, but I have found these two tools from Teakdecking systems, the reef hook and seam sander, to be mandatory. The reef hook does a great job not only for removing old caulk, but for cleaning up the seam bottom and sharpening up the side edges.

Here is some work done recently on my Boston Whaler’s teak console using these tools.
