Smith Island Cake Showdown

The best cake on the planet earth
Yesterday for me might have been the real fist day of summer. I had the entire day off and the weather was kick’n it. Flat water, 70’s light breeze and jimmy was itch’n for a ride as well. So Jimmy, Hank and Suzy2 and I decided on a ride to Smith Island Maryland for a slice of cake. And yes we did the match, came out to about $300 in fuel, since Jimmy’s 34 ft Regulator and 3 300hp Yamahas was doing the trip. Thats the only bad news, the good news, it took us no time to get there. 40 is cruising speed.

Hank and the 900 HP beasts
As we arrived to Smith Island, you could smell the Crap cakes being prepared, and thats when the concept of lunch was introduced through our olfactory system took over from the auto pilot system. Humanity just stepped in and did the rest

The bayside Inn

Oh heck ya
We wound up at the Bayside Inn, and had us a very good Crab Cake and warm smile from the locals. Which of course led to CAKE. And who had the best cake in town. After all it is the official state desert of Maryland, and no doubt made in many areas. And of course the bayside Inn sells them as well.

A short walk down main street

Wait? Henry Smith? Thats Hanks real name. WHAT? Are we with a local celeb

Lots of churches

I bet they have cakes

But we had come to go to the local bakery on the island. The Smith Island Bakery, which had shipped us a couple cakes before.
So, as it turns out, the Bakery makes their version, and a bunch of ladies on the island make them of course, and those are sold at the Inn. Both ship, both same recipe. And as the server said there, they are all kinda the same. But there is something about a bunch of ladies making cakes that sounds like fun to test. Would there be a difference? Did we have us a good old Show Down?

The peanut M&M was on one of them
So we purchased two half’s. One from the Inn, one from the bakery. The same version, chocolate, the most popular, and headed back home for burgers on the grill and the cake off.

One from the Inn, one from the Bakery
The Boatress took control and served us a plate with two cake and the battle was underway, with a clear ish winner. Us? To be honest, it was almost impossible to tell the difference. The Bakery Cake was more of a polished look, and tasted amazing. 5 stars. And local lady at the Inn version, was softer. As in smoother. It all blended better. Moister. You can see the difference above. And we all liked the Inn version, but all agreed, that if ordering, the consistency of product may be more reliable from the bakery and the difference was so subtle that you would never really know the difference. So if you are going to the island, The Bayside Inn. 100% And if you are mail ordering, The Bakery. BTW, they also come in many different flavors. AND the Bayside Inn also ships. So you could do it that way and claim you are a local expert and these are the more personal versions. Which is the next big test. Maybe next summer. UGH.

Where is Smith island? , Heck where is Reedville?

35 minutes at 40 mph, 4 hrs in Sweet Pea.
And here is a recent story on 60 Minutes about Smith Island
What a great way to finish off a $300+ Crap cake lunch. I thought you were going to elaborate on how you are related to the Smith Island family. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Yes – – Not a Cake Walk, but a Cake Ride – –
– That Takes The Cake –
You know takes the cake….
We overnighted 2 for our wedding back in 2022! The Inn version was less chocolate heavy and more just a balanced flavor
Wow. Sucking down $300 worth of fuel to visit a beautiful island that will be lost to rising sea levels. A dose of irony. Old people, a closed school and a nearby now dead island. Sadly, the writing is on the wall…or dock I guess.
Glad to see though that you got to enjoy the place and day. It is really beautiful.
Somehow I missed this story the other day.
Here is a shot of Melody at the same dock at 3 Knots Marina on Smith Island.
It looks like you missed this sign.
