Sweet Pea’s Old Family Photos! And More Color Options. Sorry Horace!
Regal Run
Over the weekend, I finally was able to get some old paper work from some of Sweet Pea’s background. She has had four previous names. Irish Sea, Solitude, Regal Run and SeaGal. And now Sweet Pea! So we will of course have a ceremony and do this right.

Its always interesting to see some older photos, and things all make more sense. Like, it did have a rail on her, which we are going to re install. Also one heck of a 1980’s color thing there happening. Looks like a late 60’s Barracuda Stripe kit.

It also looks like 3 of these were made, from plans and Rice marine Railway was the go to source for her construction. She has lived in Florida, The Bahamas, Annapolis and up and down the South East Coast. Made many runs. The more we clean her up and play with her, the better she gets. Everything works, Clif has gone through a list of dated electrical issues. It all works, just needed GFI and other safety stuff. We have changed all the lights to LED which is brighter and less drain. She is getting there, so we can go there one day this summer. Wherever that there is!
Sadly all the bright work has been painted over around the windows. Which is fine I suppose. I have enough varnishing to do yearly. So we will limit the amount.
Here current color plan. A slight Pettit Hatteras Off White, and Kirby Paints Sea Foam Green. There are several to choose from.Yikes. I am partial to the first one that is a Custom mix by Kirby.

The color White is even named Bray White. Like the family name. Its a sign!

I think with all the wood and stuff it might make sense to leave the hull off white?
Love Kirby paint. I’ve used it a lot over the years. They have a great selection of traditional wooden boat colors and their just 15 minutes from my house. It’s a real old fashioned paint store with a great reputation and their boat paint smells like boat paint should. Happy Painting!
How could you not go with Pea Green for Sweet Pea? Actually that’s the least favorite of the greens pictured IMHO.
I know, and it had that color on her at some point. But its a little harsh. The tan and white is looking better and better.
If you are wondering where to go this summer, the Erie Canal will be free for recreational boaters this year. If you head up the Hudson and across the Erie Canal and Lake Erie in late August, you might find that the Michigan guys are having one of their secret shows.
We will have a slip ready for Sweet Pea in Port Huron.

I remember struggling over “off-whites” to paint the walls of our first home. When it was all said and done the walls just looked white.
IMHO the tan would be a big mistake – too pedestrian; stick with Seafoam Green.
And while you are at it please reconsider the brightwork issue. You will have plenty of time to strip and revarnish those window casings during your Great Loop trip.
We are seriously looking at the bright work. I started a bit this weekend and the paint did come off. So Maybe. Its out in the sun alot though. I am thinking that in the case of this boat, maybe a different finish than Varnish. Awegrip makes a great clear finish. May do a couple coats of varnish for the rich tones?
Yes Horace is also uses several other names. Not Dim though, that was another one. Just another 3 weeks and we can bask in mahogany goodness. And yes, off whites are a living hell. The trick is to pick a base color and match the white to that?
Do varnish (or whatever). Lends dignity and class to a great looking vessel. Don’t forsake the varnish-lovers !
Previous life pics are a great find for our boats! Every time you look at them, especially over time, you see something you missed the last time, really neat.
My little trawler is on the hard in a fantastic shop getting re tanked (no…not like Troy). $$ but she should come out ready to cruise. Maybe I can race sweet pea? If pea hits 8 K I lose!

Gotta take it back to bright finished trim. That would be a nice husband and wife project, have her build sweat equity into the boat.
Looking good Matt, please do the window frames in a varnish finish. I know it is a lot of work, but so well worth it. Doing the Steelcraft sedan this past Fall with Mr. Mugge was a bit of a chore, but one more final coat this Spring and we will be ready for the next fifty years!
The previous brightwork really make the boat “pop” – we all know how much work that adds; but just think how many extra Woody Boater posts you can milk?!?!

I personally prefer “Regal Run” colors, as shown in the header.
Maybe it came with ‘Pea Green’ paint on it.., which led you to call it “Sweet Pea” in the first place?
Note from the header photo, obviously in bright sunlight, that the vast bulk of the window trim varnish is in shade because of the house-top overhang.
Varnish should last long here.
I really love the varnished rails and misc. accents, but paint the window frames. Starts to look a little busy. Cruiser finishes that sit outside baking in the sun and exposed to the elements take a beating. Gotta keep the glass sealed and how much varnish do you really want to cut in and maintain on a trawler.
