“The Ladies Like The Scent Of Pine Oil”

Old can found in a pile of stuff

This is a quote from Mrs Palmer who mentioned this in passing as we were gathering up some old cans of stuff from the pick this past summer. I laughed, and then, I opened up a can of it the other day and dang! A woman walked in and said, oh, whats that smell? NOW, to be clear, one can read this two ways. I normally am familiar with the negative side of that question. But, she liked it. And well, it was strong. Not Sex panther strong, but strong. OKAY OKAY, let’s get this out of the way.

Now back to Pine Oil. It’s said it can be linked to a feeling of cleanliness. And there is some stuff on the internet about essential oils. Yad yada, but when a boat builders wife says the smell drives the ladies crazy. I am sticking with that. Now of course, lately I have been wearing the scent of PB Blast, and I can say that also drives the ladies crazy. As in the other way. Oddly enough varnish is on the okay list, gasoline, not so good, silicone lubricant, not good, old oil, no good. But some good old Cedar chips from the planer always add a touch of niceness to the space. Bottom line, car stuff is not good, and wood stuff is good.

And there ya have it. One more reason why restoring boats is better for your love life than cars! BOOM!

Once again, the stuff I learn here! I think I will conduct my own independent study on this topic. I will report back later.

Windy conditions during an early spring Lake Tahoe visit had all the pine needles rubbing together leading to the observation ‘Nothing smells like Lake Tahoe’ – –

Back in the late 60s, a buddy of mine used to customize his smell. A little English Leather, some Brut, maybe a dab of British Sterling – – I’ve forgotten some of the others. He usually smelled INTERESTING

On a Comet Trail bike ride from NW Atlanta to the Alabama line and back we were hit with tornado sirens and a hail storm sending us sheltering under a bridge overpass. The ensuing fresh pine smell was so invigorating to breathe in the last 10 miles of that long 120 trip. As an aside, I’ve always thought about bottling up a Chris Craft bilge smell as an essential oil or men’s cologne. Not sure who that might attract tho.

Speaking of smells, my dad was a hardcore golfer. He always said he loved the smell of the golf course. In fact, I have friends who say the same thing now. But I worked on the Scotts lawn care advertising account -the professional products side that they sell to golf courses- early in my career. I learned that the smell my father and others loved is actually the smell of fungus and fungicide. Because golf courses have to be watered so heavily, they’re fungus farms.

    Yes, yes indeed!

17 years ago, I acquired an unfinished Yellowjacket. The cute little blonde nurse I was seeing at the time remarked, “When are you going to finish that and take me for a ride?” Eyeing the two foreign car projects parked next to it, I quickly realized she had never asked that question about the cars. I sold them both and never looked back.
