The Official Woody Boater Mailbox Is Ready….For Bills!

Woody Mail box 4

One of the things that needed immediate replacement at our new HQ on Massy Creek near DC was the delapitaded mailbox. That was a year ago. Of course nothing is simple when it comes to custom Mailbox’s. The neighborhood is full of cool mail box’s, several use old shafts, some are like light houses, barns, even the open fish mouth kind. So ours had to be special, yet subtle,  and communicate Woodyness. The problem is that a real wood mail box would rot according to all the mail box guys. So step in Mahogany Reflections and his cool hand painted wood grained metal mail box. He custom made this for us, so it was simple. Just a hint of Woody boatness.

Then I went down to Home Depot and bought an off the rack Mail box stand and copper cap. Chopped off the strange pointed top on the off the rack stand..

With the stain and varnish. Like Butta! We did all the lettering at Preston Signs here in Falls Church VA, the art is out of an old book of art stuff! Gold reflective material so at night it can be seen. Its functional as well. Dang!

Then I used Chris Craft mahogany stain and hit the sucker with 5 coats of varnish. BAM! The wife is happy, the neighbors are happy, i am happy. Hopefully the kids and there baseball bats at 2AM will spare us the inevitable whack!

Beautiful, but you shoulda gone with the goldleaf. Now here’s hoping that you don’t have teens with bats around there. I finally gave up and bought a Rubbermaid. Hate it but it’s lasted. Good luck.

That is cool as heck. Obviously you don’t have to worry about snowplows throwing snow at it at 50 MPH. But it definitely signifies the “center of the wooden boat universe.”

Just think if you decide to go with a “Glass Cruiser” you will need to change your mail box again.

I can see it now a custom made fiberglass, gel coated mailbox.

If that happens there will be a disturbance in the FORCE.

My mail box has been taken out by plows, baseball bats, skidding cars and even a guy on a bicycle.

If I make a nautical themed mail box, it will be made out of the thick armor plating from a decommissioned battle ship.

Maybe even Ferro Cement. You know there must be some 20yo cement boats out there but you never see them at the shows.

I saw those mailboxes at Lake Dora. What a work of art. I really wished we had a mailbox but our mail goes to one of those community boxes. No baseball bats there but envious of those who could install one like this beauty. You are now going to be on the ‘House Tour’ Circuit but only to gawk at your mailbox. Let us know if tour buses come by. Great installation too.

That box is not BIG ENOUGHT to hold all the bills for a full blown restoration, BATTLESHIP size might do it.:):)

Wondering why the “flag” is RED… as a signal flag this means: “I am taking in or discharging or carrying dangerous goods.”

I would think the signal flag below might work better…
“”I wish to communicate with you.” 🙂

You could get these Bills. They won’t fit in the mail box but they are for sale and won’t cost as much as a cruiser restoration.

Between the teenagers with bats and the large tractors and combines moving up and down our road that mailbox would not make it very long, After losing 1 I went to lowes and bought the strongest one they sell and still have to do a little bodywork on the door area every once in a while, but yours sure looks good.

Is there an antique/classic show circuit for these ‘WoodyBoxes’? Is there a separate class for them at the Lake Dora show?

Randy – There was a separate class developed just for post boxes at Dora, but they always arrived late – so we had to cancel it.

WOOHOO! You got it done! It looks great and I’m drooling with envy, but I have 0 mailboxs. Slot in the door in VA & in OK a P.O. box in town.
