The Price of Vintage Boat Cushions. My Fault?
$600 worth of cushions.
A week or so ago, I posted a story on spending 300 bucks on a boat cushion. In the comment section, Woody Boater got kinda shot at for causing prices to go up for boat cushions. First, thank you. and your welcome. And sorry. okay thats first second and third.
Sold for $750 at an auction.
Second, or fourth? Really? Does anyone think that WoodyBoater can effect the price of anything? I don’t think so. Yah we try and raise awareness of different things. And boat cushions are art. And cool, maybe folks were just aware of them? There is an old saying in the marketing world. “Nothing kills a bad product faster than good advertising” And man oh man is it true. Ever try wine coolers? Great ads, killed that one fast. I suppose the opposite can be said for simple awareness of amazing products. Just talking about them can create interest. In fact there is a chart about how it works.

Woody Boater is just the Awareness part. The rest is the product, or services part of the sales funnel. And some boat cushions are very cool, and some not. And their prices stay boringly low.

The pricing is a function of supply and demand. Supply is extremely limited, so it only takes a few new people with demand to move the market. So, yes, I do think Woodyboater is able to move prices on things like this if you and just a couple of readers suddenly start collecting.
I seen two at a flea market. A month later he still had them. I should have realized he liked them by the way they were wrapped in clear plastic. $195 and $225 and they were sorta plain. I’m sure they will be at the St. Germain again today.
Who cares if woody boater is inflating old butt cushions! I just want to go to a boat show! Damnit.
Cudos to you for seeing the value in these awesome pieces of art!!! People all too often can’t see it. And I feel sorry for them. I am a maker of handcrafted sea-inspired jewelry and we makers battle the same issue all the time. So I hope you could hear me cheering at my computer as I was reading this!
It can be amazing when someone even semi-famous accidentally endorses a product just by using it and having a picture or video of them with it. Even long outdated items.
Case in point: Jerry Douglas, the highly talented Dobro player had a picture on his 2005 CD of him using a late 1930’s vintage National Lap Steel guitar. Although he used it as a photo prop and may or may not have actually played it on that CD, suddenly it was a highly sought after instrument. Prices soared to over $1000.00 when only a 10 years prior you could find them in pawn shops for maybe $10.00 because no one wanted them anymore. They were a quality instrument in their day and I felt lucky to find a near mint condition one for under $700.00.

In all the flea markets in all of the world, a guy named Matt walked into mine and bought three boat cushions.
