Vintageizing A New Fire Extinguisher? Why? I Don’t Know.

I was thinking the other day, that we tend to hide the new fire extinguishers and put out the cool brass ones. And that kinda defeats the purpose of being able to grab one fast. So why not take a new one and paint it brass ish? And to take it further, get or create a sticker for it so it really feels the part. I wont win you anything at a show except a chuckle. But ya gotta admit. It kinda looks cool.

I left the newer sticker on it, Seems like it might be a legal thing. And don’t want to sacrifice safety for looking good. Then again..

These stickers, are available on ebay in various languages of all things. I also tried a rose gold, and gold color spray. I think the gold is closer, but I blended a bit of rose gold in it to make it look a little brasser.. This is all subjective and part of the fun
NOTE, the Stickers are on order and take 2 weeks to make it here. So these are those stickers photo shopped onto the new extinguishers. There are also some original Brass labels out there. Haven’t tried that one yet. UGH.. I so need a boat ride.. 3 Weeks!!!!!!!!!!

Looks great, but I would keep them away from the engine where the fire is likely to be. You don’t want to have to reach through the flames to get to it.

Yes! What a great idea. Ive always had the delimma of quick accessibility if needed vs looking out of place where everthing else is vintage. Would ideally like a removable lable so I d have both the look,and keep the Coasties happy… but since I carry multiple extinguishers (had boat fire experience many years ago and was able to suppress fire and save boat because I had multiple accessible fireex) may just paint visible ones. Cool look for a new extinguisher but…technically you cannot refinish a portable extinguisher as it alters the factory finish and could hide corrosion. I don’t know how the USCG is in your area, but here in upstate NY, extinguishers must be inspected and tagged by an extinguisher company yearly to avoid a ticket. Just having an extinguisher aboard is not enough. A physical exterior inspection and internal hydrostatic testing are part of the extinguisher company’s process. Internal inspections and recharges are every 12 years as I recall. At that point, its usually more economical just to purchase new.
Original labels cannot be altered. Yeah I know, more government regulations.
No snow today or this week! Actually hit 40° At 71″ for the season. Couple more feet to match last year. I’ll leave early if need be.
Just noticed that the one’s you’re using are the plastic head style. Most extinguisher companies will not guarantee a recharge on these as the tend to leak, so technically they’re a use once and throw away type. The aluminum head ones are rechargeable but of course, cost more.

Ha, all good. I replace them yearly anyway, and have three on board at all times. This one is where it can be seen only. The one in the engine bay, is the left over one. I wasnt sure of the rules. And dont need to die to look cool. if anything, I go a little to far. On WECATCHEM I have them in every storage area, and one near my feet. But to be honest, if the fire gets a little large, I am gonna dive overboard and let it burn. No need to be a hero on the water. And isnt rat urine an old fire putter outer?

Amazing that the labels are available….the stuff people repro is so strange….I will bet they count on sell a couple dozen of those….

On a different subject, fwiw, my original tool box (’38), at least, is divided so the smaller part toward the bow, holds an oil can and the rest is for tools, etc.
I see that yours is not divided. do you know if that is original to your boat?

Looks cool but bad idea. The reason fire extinguishers are painted a certain color is so people will know to grab the red thing to put out a fire. They should also be mounted in a conspicuous place and readily available. That being said, I have seen chrome plated ones. Sorry to rain on your parade, being a

Yep, I carry multiple in all sizes, just because. Just because? Well, when did you purchase yours and have you looked at the recharge gauge? Does it read full?
Heck, you’ll even find them in my outboards!
Like a good insurance policy, never want to find out later it didn’t work or you weren’t covered…….
